Dominic Young has dealt Newcastle a devastating blow on the eve of their NRL premiership opener after informing the Knights of his plans to join the Sydney Roosters next season.
Young, coming off a scintillating World Cup for England, is understood to have also informed the Dolphins and Gold Coast Titans of his plans to link with the Roosters in 2024.
However, the news was of most significance to the Knights, who invested their faith in Young and turned him into an international superstar.
The Knights did everything they could to keep the 21-year-old but their attempts to sign him to a long-term deal appear to have come up short as he prepares to move to Sydney’s eastern suburbs next season.
The Dolphins and Titans had also made big plays for Young but it wasn’t enough as the Roosters wielded out their big guns in an attempt to sign the England international.
News Corp recently reported that Roosters coach Trent Robinson wined and dined Young as part of their recruitment plan and he appears to have worked his magic.
Young is understood to have received offers in excess of $500,000 a season from rival clubs but the chance to join the Roosters was too tempting.
News Corp understands that Young held further talks with his management on Monday night as he weighed up whether to stay at the Knights, move to Sydney or accept the lucrative dollars on offer in south-east Queensland
The Dolphins’ interest in Young was well known but News Corp understands that the Titans threatened to blow the other clubs out of the water with their bid for the try-scoring winger.
Their attempt to poach Young came as they fought their own battle to keep David Fifita, who has his own big money offer on the table from Canberra.
Young, however, is the first domino to fall as a handful of the game’s biggest names - led by Mitchell Moses and Fifita - prepare to make a call on their playing futures over the next fortnight.
Young’s manager Michael Cincotta confirmed his client was ready to make a call following talks over the weekend.
“It’s an important, long-term decision for Dominic in the context of his career,” Concetta said.
“The decision will be made this week so he’s completely focused on preparing for round one.”
Young’s stocks soared in the wake of his performance at the World Cup, where he starred for an England side that qualified for the semifinals.
The Knights were hopeful he will stay but they had a fight on his hands given the Roosters are circling along with the Dolphins and Titans.
News Corp understands that the Queensland clubs were always considered outsiders in the battle for Young given the Roosters’ reputation in the player market and the Knights’ quietly confidence that he wants to stay.
While his future is expected to be resolved within days, Moses and Fifita along with Brisbane pair Herbie Farnworth and Thomas Flegler are expected to have their futures resolved before round one.
Moses is weighing up a big-money deal from the Wests Tigers while Fifita has been wooed by the Canberra Raiders. Flagler and Farnworth are believed to be in the sights of the Dolphins among others.
