On this season a lot also comes down to form.
I said I expect Matterson to come back and kill it. He has. He is our best forward no ifs or buts. A slow start to his Parra career but now he is killing it.
Hopgood goes ok. I reckon he is a bit hot and cold but. He isn’t a superstar but a good honest player.
RCG prior to injury also excellent.

After that the pack drops off. Jnrs forms been very ordinary as has Lanes since back. Bryce has been very good but he isn't a star. The rest are toilers. Indont expect much from them.

Halves have been fair. Gutherson and Penisini excellent. Sivo gets a pass as does Simmonson. But hardly anything great.
Other backs have been ordinary. While Hodgsons been well below NRL level. He would be in the bottom 4 hookers in comp.

Every club wants backups with NRL experience and a few pre-seasons under their belt. It doesn't mean they want to pay more than minimum salary. St George were so desperate for forwards they got rid of Aaron Woods ffs

Hodgson was supposedly on $950k at the Raiders in 2022...I suspect the Faiders wanted to pay very little for Hodgson to play elsewhere, and the Tigpies didn't think paying a large wack of $950k was value, so it didn't happen.

As you allude to, we probably already showed interest before Mahoney decided to move on, so the moment that happened Hodgson probably thought $950k from the Faiders in 2022 and a similar amount from us as what the Tigpies were offering (maybe slightly less) in 2023 was the better deal. You'd think we're not getting a lot of change from $500k for Hodgson in 2023.

These timelines are assuming that all these decisions were made on the day contract was announced though. Mahoney has come out this year saying he wanted to be his own player away from Moses, Gutho, etc. 100% this would’ve come up in our very initial talks (probably even years before) with him. So the dollars to convince him were likely well above what we required of him and we would’ve known this well before.
We likely showed interest in Hodgson before Mahoney signed anywhere. Contract negotiations may have moved quickly and I think Hodgson has been a extremely disappointing signing but ultimately the two contracts need to either be considered separately or over a longer likely period.
