This is how I see it. In 2024 we have N.Brown and Waqa off the books. Lets not argue and call Waqa 400k amd Brown 500k. We also would have the 180k we saved from N.Brown for this year so about 1 million.
High chance Hodgson retires as well. We should have money to buy a few players or atleast one decent one. I agree it is to early to call the season over. But come rnd 15 if things aren't improving I think we start to plan for 2024.

That means Doorey,Morreti,Mataele,Grieg,Russel should all play and get some decent minutes. No point burning guys like Jnr,Rcg and Matterson out every week.

As I told you start of the year our good juniors are more likely to filter thru 2025 onwards. I am unsure I see anything bar what I mentioned being NRL ready for 24. Maybe Jock Brazel could be a suprise toward end of season or Betham.

I have no doubt we will be a much better side in 2024. 2025 is hard to judge because Jnr and RCG could decline.
I think we need to target the following, whilst trying to honour Brads bargain basment philosophy:

1) Connor Treacy;

2) Samuel stonestreet or Kayal iro - if possible Jeral Skelton;

3) Eddie Blacker or Trey Mooney - if possible, Twal

4) Jayden Berrell or Tyson Smoothy

we could get them all with the budget mentioned

I hear we are not going for Averillo.
I said it last week, his defence is too suspect to have him as first choice centre (probably better than what we have but are we ok with just getting better than that or do we want the real top quality?).
He’s a bit of a positionless player that no longer really exists in the limited interchange era.
As much as I think he’s a bit of a knob, I’d be asking about Tass. I’m sure a change of uniform will make him less of a knob.

Defence is poor?

He is safe under the high ball.
He is the leading tryscorer in the NRL.
He has improved his defensive reads x 10 in the last 12 months.

Sure he could return the ball harder, but he brings 3 players in to tackle him every time.
Least of our issues at the moment.

I agree.

Sivo has been really good this year - that break he made against Newcastle showed us that while he doesn't have elite speed, he is pretty quick.

If we had a Sivo clone on out other wing, able to make hard carries,we'd be laughing.

Both Lomax and Averillo have shown good signs at Right Centre only. We don't need a Right Centre, and we don't need a Right Centre to play Left Centre.

I reckon they could each make the switch to left centre, easily.

Lomax could use his large reach to pop some nice around-the-corner offloads to Sivo.

Averillo has already played wing, fullback, and 5/8 in his short career, and acquitted himself well. I'm sure he would make the switch just fine.

I don't think having a specialist right centre, or vcur versa, is that important - what happens when there is an injury, or a concussion, or a send-off?

Players need to be adaptable survive.

We are done for 23 ?

I think so, yes.

The losses of Lane, and Matterson (yes, yes, I know) were big blows early on.

Now we've lost our halfback, and our best prop is out indefinitely.

Not to mention that Brad has still not been able to address our abysmal defence.

I'm a pessimist from being an Eels fan for over 20 years, but I don't see us making the 8 now.

Lomax has transitioned so well from Right Centre to Left Centre that he has now been dumped because he's going so shit.

Averillo at a lower cost is probably worth the risk.

If, as I now expect, we don't make the finals in 2023, one of the biggest missed opportunities would have been utilising that Round 26 bye going in the finals.... It would be perfect to be able to use that week to freshen players up without having to sit them out of a competitive match.

I'm sure all clubs would be lobbying in future seasons to get that round 26 as their 3rd bye.... We had our chance but look to have blown it...
