Would you tell your current half-back (Fogarty) that is free to leave as Sexton will be given the job next season, and only be prepared to pay that replacement half back minimum wage?
If he was already on the books at minimum there’s no reason to upgrade him given he hasn’t achieved anything.

Given he was a Bulldogs junior, why would he have gone to the Gold Coast for minimum?

When Fogarty first signed with the Titans he was informed Sexton would eventually take his job https://www.zerotackle.com/former-titan-opens-up-on-costly-departure-and-succession-plan-121007/

Surely you don't pay minimum for a player you have such a high opinion of.

Well he is a Queenslander. If there was little demand for him, minimum salary might've been the best offer he could get. Bottom of the top 30 is better than most 19 year old halfbacks would be getting.

If their opinion was so high why did they sign Fogarty? Yes they planned for him to 'eventually' take over but that doesn't mean paying him as a starting halfback from day one. I'm sure we 'intend' (hope) for Sanders to take over from Moses eventually but he isn't even in the development list at the moment.

Sexton signed his current extension at age 20, before he had played a single game in first grade: https://www.titans.com.au/news/2021/06/25/sexy-signing-toby-a-titan-until-24/

I suspect it's unlikely an Australian Schoolboy half signed a deal anywhere for the following three seasons for minimum wage the entire time. He's manager is very poor if that is the case. At the time he signed the deal I suspect he was informed he would be the starting 7 the next season, as Fogarty was moved on soon after.

I don't think he would be on the average starting salary for a 7, but I suspect he's on more than minimum wage.

if he was on minimum wage, why would the Titans want to offload him?

He might be on $150k which is a lot more than minimum from the perspective of a player but an insignificant difference from the perspective of the salary cap. I’ll grant he might even be on $200k, also not a huge gap from the minimum salary in the context of a $12M cap.

Given Flanagan’s achievements at the time he signed his current deal with the Dogs he could be on double that.

It’s a fair point. However forcing players to stay when they’re not even playing first grade is poor for recruitment/retention of other players.

So I am guessing part of Gus pitch to Greedy at the Chinese restaurant in Canterbury leagues back in november 2021 was we are going to have a shit 2023.

But hey we will pay you good money so come over and leave a top 6 team for a bottom 4 team and play under Cameron ciraldo.

While Trent Barrett the bulldogs coach at the time was in attendance as well at the meeting.

Haha you can't make this shit up.

There is no way the Bulldogs fans and Greed saw 2023 as another rebuild season. They were sold a lemon and isn't it glorious.

Trouble is their 2023 season has been so bad, they'll have to have another re-build season in 2024 to get over it and even start to improve... how many years did Reed sign for again 😂?

I don't think anyone is indicating that Gus would have said the same things to Mahoney as he would to Ciraldo, in fact, I'd be surprised if he was that open with players.

Id be surprised if he said it to Ciraldo. The old Jedi mind trick.
Loved his line about not going for the quick fix.

Gus is such a great guy.... Tried to tell Ciraldo not to start this year, was trying to do him a favour and tell him to avoid coaching a shit team in 2023... What a guy!!

And I assume he communicated as much to the Board - i.e he actively discouraged their number 1 coaching target from coming for season 2023. Is there another GM of football out there that advocates not bringing in a new coach asap just so he can let the next season's shit show proceed as planned?? How would you sell that to the Board?

The merkin has the best revisionist spiels in the history of rugby league
