That’s correct and shows poor judgement and action the previous season to prepare the squad. Good clubs line up their recruits a season ahead of any scramble as allowed. Roosters signed Young, Dolphins signed Farnsworth and Averillo, even the Dogs signed Crichton and as a club we weren’t in the market for any of them, which falls back on the recruitment team.
Now they’re talking Morgan Harper, whose claim to fame was playing so shithouse agst Cronulla that the Sharks fat centre got picked for Origin.

That’s a very simplistic way of looking at it and surprising coming from you. Why is that the cut off for recruitment? We’ve had that cap space available all season (and preseason). There are quality outside backs that have signed elsewhere in this time.

The Offa signing was to try and strengthen our middle in the lead up to the finals. In this regard, it was a horrific signing. Let’s hope we get more value out of it next year.

There is one Eel (Hopgood) in the top 50 in the NRL for carries, and zero in the top 50 for carries per game: https://www.nrl.com/stats/players/?competition=111&season=2023&stat=1000038

Meanwhile there are eight forwards in the top 50 for carries/game, including three who just played in the grand final. I think your perception that our forwards are overused is out of date.

Is it possible Harper isn't being signed for the top 17? To be honest, I think we've got Sivo, Simonsson, Penisini and Russell locked into top 17 contracts. Penisini and Russell are only 21. They should both be better players next year. Harper could be on minimum salary, which is good for a merkin with over 50 NRL games. He's actually got a 55% win rate too. It's very exciting.
