I would say they were bigger back then. They had only merged a few years earlier and still had a stack of Origin players on the books. They made the finals in four of the five years before Bennett got there. In fact, whatever they spent to get him there and meet his demands, it looks like they never recovered financially. Their post-Bennett results look nothing like their results before Wayne Bennett arrived at the club. Sometimes the price of success can literally ruin a club. Look at Newcastle after Bennett, and they didn’t even have a premiership to show for it.It’s self refuting to say a club our size most likely be only getting a good enough coach and then talk about the time the Dragons had Bennett as their coach.
