No NRL employee, NRL Club employee, player, player manager or game official is allowed to participate, or be directly or indirectly involved in any way, in gambling in relation to Rugby League or be involved directly or indirectly, in the provision of information not already in the public domain that might assist another person to gamble in relation to Rugby League.

It's quite clear that the NRL forbid players coaches etc from betting on an NRL game. So players who do so are l in breach of contract.

That doesn't mean that an NRL player betting on an NRL game has necessarily broken the law. If the player simply makes a bet on a game that they have no influence over, and with respect to which they have no private information, they have not broken any law.

Haven't broken the law no, but they are well aware of their responsibilities as a player. It's pretty stupid to lose $200,000 a year or more for a few $10 bets if that is what they were.

What exactly the bets relate to remains a mystery, but there is some talk they related to Simona allegedly betting on himself to be first try scorer.

As the article says though - the NRL are giving access to the betting companies more and more and encouraging people to bet but then telling players it's bad.

Still written in to their contract. Can't use an excuse to say that it was only a small bet yada yada. Not that you were. I have see. A lot of people on Facebook using the excuse about the NRL being too PC and that as long as it's not on his team it's all good.

i can't see how the nrl can have anything else but a zero tolerance policy towards players betting on games
as soon as you say players can bet but not on their own team etc it opens up a can of worms

Yes, exactly. The policy is right. It's not as if players are being denied a basic human right. They're not even being prevented from gambling in a broader sense.
