We basically had him signed for 2020 before he did his ACL in 2019 and decided to take up his player option and remain in Melbourne for rehab. The club has known for years we needed better onfield leadership and he was one we were after for that role.

Yet we sign Will Smith while recuperating from an injury. I think an ACL.
I think we withdrew our offer foe Welch.

It depends on how it is worded.

It COULD mean that both parties need to agree to trigger it
OR it could mean that both parties need to agree to dissolve it (ie, if either party takes up the option, then it extends)

Whilst I agree its hard to judge our edges based on the defensive structure throughout the club. A different emphasis on D might show some players true worth or not.

A greater emphasis on defence would be unlikely to improve opportunities for poor defenders.

And if you can’t find a merkin worth exactly $135k you need to either pay someone more than that or overpay someone who isn’t even worth minimum salary.

I think he meant a greater emphasis on defence at training... you know, coach the players to improve their defensive style and also improve the teams defensive structure.
