The NRL doesnt stop a player signing a Contract but what you are talking about would stop a club signing the player which is a restraint of trade. Its not my opinion, its already been tested in court and its common sense. If a player signs a Contract that has nothing to do with the club, $0 goes on the cap no matter how much the player earns.

Hypothetically Tampax signs King Guffo for $2M to be the face of Tampax, Guffo cant sign for any club?
Depends if it's dependent on him playing for the Tigers or not.

One thing Ryles said that stood out.

Was were going to play our own style the Parramatta Way. Ryles will create his own style and back himself.

He is not going to full on copy Melbourne or the Roosters because he knows we don't have the players to play that way. Take parts of each and implement what he have.

Its something that dimwit Kearney when he arrived didnt figure out from day 1. Trying to turn us into Melbourne when we weren't capable of it.
Why do you think he was trying to turn us into Melbourne? Because we lost all the time? Would we have won more if we had played a different style? Did he try to turn Hayne into Slater or Finch? Was Stuart trying to turn us into Melbourne when he only five games in 2013 or did we just have a shit squad?

And is it possible the squad was already shit when Kearney took over? After 2010 we lost these players:

Cayless
Grothe
Inu
Keating (Kris)
Mateo
Tahu
Wright

The 'success' of 2009 made the salary cap tight, just as it did after 2022. Those 2010 losses were replaced with cheap alternatives in 2011:

Atkins
Hicks
McGuire
Maitua
Paulo
Walker
Webb
Whatuira

Plus cheap internal promotions:

Allgood
Lasalo
Loko
Morgan
O'Hanlon
Uaisele

Ugly reading, but it is insane to blame the incoming coach for the quality of the squad. By 2010 we were on the downhill slide. 2011 was just a continuation of that. It wasn't until 2014 that our salary cap was back in shape. Illegal TPAs helped get us there.

Firstly Pou clearly showed it’s not a restraint of trade.
What the hell are you talking about. The courts determined its a restraint of trade and OF course its a restraint of trade.

What if Nathan Cleary signs a $6M contract with Nike and that has to go under the cap? Do Penrith sign him? Does this restrain his trade?

Everyone gets paid and no one is stopped from doing their job. It’s just the competition they signed up for kind of becomes moot then.
Complete rubbish, if genuine TPA's are on the salary cap, of course its going to restrain signings and the money that players can earn, see hypothetical above.

Secondly the CBA specifically dictates this. The players have agreed to allow this degree of “restraint of trade”.
Really? Specifically you say? Can you point to the section where the players agreed to have their personal income, unrelated to NRL a factor of their NRL Contract?

Thirdly I don’t think Pou or anyone else suggested all TPAs should be included under the cap (at least not without new CBA).

Do you two share a brain? If so, what did Pou mean when he said "What they do is make it count under the salary cap"

You can have a mediocre squad and still be a mediocre coach. It’s not like he did much better when his coaching record is examined under a larger sample size. During his time at the Warriors Kearney still finished 13th,8th,13th and 13th. I’d say he highly unlikely he’s employed as an NRL grade coach again.

If the NRL deem a TPA is used to entice a player to sign at one club over another then it will be counted under the cap. They’ve done it before. If Nike is paying Cleary $6M I don’t think they give a shit which club he plays for. But a $100k TPA from a club partner is probably going on the cap.

Not a huge re-signing, but TCT have said Dan Keir has resigned on a development contract.

Good depth signing, no super star, but mobile, smaller forward which is back in.

Plus point was made, he has had a lot of injuries early in career, plus covid which has affected his development after being a very promising junior.

He got in there and made his tackles. Good depth

Doesnt the fact that they didnt get paid and had to leave the game pretty much reinforce it had nothing to do with the club?

No.
They had contracts with their clubs, which suddenly became void when this so-called third party deals didn't come though.
Why would a club release a player because an outside party didn't pay up on a deal not involving them?

If I recall correctly, Kearney had us playing a simple, no frills game plan which involved fewer penalties and fewer handling errors. Focus on defence.

We had a shit squad of plodders. FFS, we had Jeff Robson and Daniel Mortimer as our halves. Sounds like he knew exaclty what kind of team he had and tried to work to its strengths.

I'm not saying he was a good coach, but I don't think he was trying to turn us into Melbourne who had generational talent at their disposal.

Of course. The point is the squad he inherited here was garbage which is why his results were much worse than his results at the Warriors. Stuart's results at Parramatta were also the worst of his career.

Kearney wasn't a good coach, but his win rate at the Warriors was nearly double what he achieved at Parramatta, proving our squad was shit. There's no magical tactic that would have had us winning games, so comparisons to the Storm and their style are an urban myth. With so many reserve graders on the field, Kearney was just trying to get us to complete our sets.

The only TPA's included under the cap are when the NRL find that the club did more than introduce the provider to the player/agent. By more, it normally indicates a closer than arms-length relationship between the provider and the club and and/or an insinuation that the club is indirectly funding the TPA using the provider as a means to avoid the cap. For example one of our TPAs thatv was deemed illegal was when the club engaged a company to do some work, paid them a way over market rate for the work and a subsidiary of that company had a TPA with a player for a similar amount of the overpayment. When the amount was added to our Salary Cap we breached it and got fined, etc.

What the hell are you talking about. The courts determined its a restraint of trade and OF course its a restraint of trade.
No. The court determined NRL couldn’t stop Wing signing a TPA under his playing contract. It didn’t stipulate that they couldn’t impose penalty on teams where the NRL find that such arrangements should be leveled against a teams salary cap. Multiple CBAs have also been agreed since then that ratifies the position. Restraints of trade occur all the time, it doesn’t mean they are always illegal.
What if Nathan Cleary signs a $6M contract with Nike and that has to go under the cap? Do Penrith sign him? Does this restrain his trade?
I may have missed a post but it seems like you’re the only one bringing up these ridiculous situations. If he did and it was determined that Penrith were the ones who stipulated it in his contract, then yes it would be included under their cap. Chinry still gets paid and still gets to play. There is no restraint of trade. The “restraint” is on Smugs then being penalised competition points, but this is a tenuous restraint of trade, Smugs have already agreed to the rules of the salary cap thus allowing the restraint and it’s even more enforceable by the fact the NRL are the ones who essentially pay for the clubs players salaries.
Complete rubbish, if genuine TPA's are on the salary cap, of course it’s going to restrain signings and the money that players can earn, see hypothetical above.
See above.

FMD… I must have missed a post…
If it is unrelated it’s not included against the salary cap of the club, if it is related it is included. Given more a shit, I could find the part where players must declare TPAs are either legit or not. But no they don’t need to say an amount if it’s unrelated. Again CBFed but the section in the CBA titled SALARY CAP deals with players agreeing to the restraints of the salary cap, albeit in a limited way. Limited because even if it was dodgy, the NRL aren’t stopping Chinry getting paid by Smugs & Nike nor stopping him from playing or wearing his free Nikes (read zero restraint of trade). The restraint, which they’ve agreed to, is on Smugs not acquiring competition points. And then the players acknowledge this in their CBA.
Do you two share a brain? If so, what did Pou mean when he said "What they do is make it count under the salary cap"
Read above. We can timeshare our brain to you for a nominal fee to help you understand the intricacies of restraints of trade.
