Angry Brad Arthur threatens the axe for ill-disciplined Eels

EELS coach Brad Arthur has warned his “ill disciplined” players they face the axe after another frustrating loss that puts the club’s finals hopes under threat.
Arthur conceded Parramatta deserved to be written off after a shocking start to the season but was bullish about the club’s ability to turn things around, pointing to last year’s top four finish that came in a hurry after a rocky start.
The 2017 Eels were 2-4 after six rounds and Arthur said his side would aim to be in the same position by winning their next two games to give them the launching pad they’ll need to make up lost ground.
But it might be some fresh faces who are given that chance, with Arthur at his wit’s end after a performance that showcased many of the same failings as the first three rounds.
“It is a problem because the discipline, we go right back to the Manly game and it started from there, our very first kick chase off the back of a good set we were offside from the kick,” Arthur said.
“So it’s individuals who have got to be accountable for it. If blokes can’t be disciplined they won’t be in the team moving forward.“
Parramatta started the season as a premiership fancy but they’ve looked anything but over the opening month, with silly penalties and an inability to control the ball for long periods cruelling their hopes of getting a first win on the board.
After their 30-20 loss to the Wests Tigers, a smouldering Arthur lamented his side’s unwillingness to take on board some harsh lessons and change their approach in a season that has been dominated by penalties.
“We’re not giving ourselves a chance in any of the games at the moment, we’re not giving ourselves a chance or putting ourselves in a position to win a game,” Arthur said.
“ ... We’re giving away penalties and leg ups out of the backfield for offside.
“It doesn’t matter if the referees want to stand 20 metres back, you’ve got to be behind them. You can’t stand in front of them.
“So until we address that, until we fix that, we’re going to have problems.”
While Arthur was extremely disappointed with his side he refused to follow Canberra coach Ricky Stuart’s lead, who labelled his own winless side “soft”.
While making the point that the Eels weren’t playing smart, he said they were doing their best in defence at times when they’ve had to make far too many tackles.
“We’re making 400 tackles a week, it’s ridiculous,” he said. “At one stage there we made 90 tackles more than the Wests Tigers.
“The penalties, yeah, they’re soft. But when you give teams that much football and it’s back-to-back, back-to-back, it takes its toll.”
Arthur said the last 20 minutes, when Parramatta scored three quick tries and briefly threatened to mount an impossible comeback, would give his players confidence that they can do some damage with an equal share of possession.
“We’ll dig ourselves out but it needs to be right now, it needs to be right now,” Arthur said.
“We can’t get too far ahead of ourselves, we just need to knuckle down and get that first win and then we’ll go from there.
“We’ve still got the potential to be in the same position as we were after six games last year.
“And that’s what we’re going to hang onto and we’re going to hang onto the fact that the last 25 minutes we actually showed we can be a decent football team — but the game goes for 80 minutes.”
