Interesting article in the ST today about the number of players we have with options in THEIR favour. It will be a real problem in coming years. How the hell can you go the market for players if you don’t know which current players will be taking up their options.

Those player options are a way to keep them cheaper early on. A premiership window means getting more value out of the cap than average, and player options are one way to do that. Backloading contacts is another way. Of course there is a price to pay later. The alternative is to never get extra value out of the cap in a given year.

They have to take up the option at least a bit in advance, so if they dont you have a little bit of time to get an alternative. .... its not a cameron smith style option where they decide the day before the season starts

Yeah, Ideally you get them on board a year out. If they wanna test the market it means that, at least in their ( the players ) eyes, you've been getting value out of them because they believe they are worth more.
