It seems that after Ferguson left, and then Jennings got suspended, we were relying on Blake, Opacic, Penisini, Dunster, Russell, Sivo, Loizou, etc. Looks as though instead of going out and buying up expensive outside backs that they would spend the money in the halves and forwards, then bring the young blokes in.

Unfortunately Loizou turned out not as good as hoped, Dunster suffered a catastrophic injury, Blake's form fell off a cliff...but we were still able to make a grand final with these players in the squad. They got some things wrong in terms of who they thought would pan out as good players, but the jury is still out on Dunster, Russell has proven himself at least a decent option, Penisini is a genuine FG centre, and we still could unearth a good player from our juniors to add to the team (Talagi?).

Other teams (such as Penrith) have let players leave, put a bunch of cheapies into the squad to fill the gaps until their top juniors come through, and then reaped the benefits. I believe this is what the club is doing...it just takes a bit of patience, unfortunately. Hopefully it works. As some merkin on this site likes to say, it's very exciting.

I believe after that review they overhauled the coaching setup, adding more staff to the club to help out BA. They hired a head of football to oversee operations (O'Neill) and put in place the Recruitment and Retention Committee. The team then placed 5th the following year, and in the top 4 the year after.

Tell me again how it was a "Clayton's Review"?
Oh, because they didn't fire your favourite punching bag?

Season 2024 hasn't started yet, so I don't know.
But maybe the review found that there wasn't an issue with the coaching and that the option of buying expensive players from elsewhere isn't feasible.

Do you have the findings of any such review?
Maybe Penrith has a better coaching team than us and can let players leave, put a bunch of cheapies into the squad to fill the gaps.

Or maybe we overrate what our coach can do

An excellent and reasoned post.

Nope, just worse value. You have to consider that a better player on overs provides less value than a worse player on unders. The difference can be spent on other areas of your salary cap. I’m astounded some of you merkins can’t wrap your heads around this idea. I don’t see how I can explain it any more clearly. Some posters get it and some don’t.

Haha yeah of course. The idiots running the club think Morgan Harper is a gun. With the money he’s on they could’ve gotten Farnworth ffs. You wouldn’t read about it!!!

Your missing the point. Morgan Harper quality is not the issue. The issue is his level should be easy to find within our huge junior base.
Let's look at Manly who let him go and their backs.

They bought these guys thru their system -

Turbo Tom
Koula
Parker
Garrick
Toupoluito

Then recruited
SAAB
Jason Paulo
T. Talau

I think all 8 of these guys make our 17 or atleast push.

Look at who we've bought thru.

Penisni - Excellent
Russel - OK and potential
Dunster - Hard to judge due to Injury but was hardly a star in the making. Maybe a solid player.

So we've recruited guys. And the level is

Simmonson
Sivo
Cini
Lumelume

I'm sure you can see the issue right? We had nothing in the pipeline and recruited guys who had no real potential.
We got lucky with Sivo being decent but was just a cheap buy.
I'm questioning why we aren't producing guys who are atleast Cini, Simmonson,Harpers level on a consistent basis. It isn't a high bar.

Brad. Oreos just granted an immediate release by the Raiders, surely the club has room in the top 30 for a genuine 3/4. Can’t. Believe we have some names in our top 30 that should be moved asap.

The point was we don’t seem to have people who can talk up the club or the opportunities, not sure that Sanders for instance is going to get more of a first grade start given who Ricky has also signed. Anyway, perhaps it’s incumbent on the board to work to provide those outside advantages. It’s tiring to constantly move sideways , now they have stabilised the financial side the board should look at creating those opportunities.

DCE waited his turn at Manly made is debut as a 21-22 year old played in the QLD cup.

Perfect example of a halfback coming through.

There are other examples of halves being snapped up by clubs or coming into first grade too early and then not making it.
Sanders needs to be smart not let his career be run by greedy managers.

Says he has lost passion for the game. Going to take a Rhoades scholar to sell him their club, or maybe an LU poster?

Scolari will not make it. Jordan Hill might. Hill is very quick.

Article I wrote for Hay Riverine Grazier in 2019.
Jordie was with WestsTigers last season - actually damaged a knee in NSW Cup match against the Eels in Round 1...and missed the rest of the season.
His mother told me this week that his 'recovery is coming along nicely. He has worked very hard to get it right, so hopefully, he can have an injury free 'comeback'.
Jordan is a great young bloke with a very good attitude. He might make it, or he might not. He deserves to, so fingers crossed for him.....

JORDAN IN SIGHTS OF TALENT SCOUTS
By Peter (Parra)
Wow, this former Hay boy has it all in front of him.
Jordan Hill, who played for Australia in the winning Under 18 Touch World Cup, and claimed the trophy for being the Tournament’s top try scorer, is continuing to attract interest from several NRL Clubs.
Jordy plays for Sydney Roosters in the NRL Touch competition which concluded recently, and this multi-sports talented athlete is also playing AFL for Sydney Uni under 19 division 1 - undefeated Minor Premiers, playing for the saloon passage into the Grand Final on Saturday.
Jordan is a member of GWS Talent Identification Squad, but he has Rugby League scouts knocking on his door.
He recently was a member of Holy Cross Ryde Open team which won the Metropolitan Catholic College premiership. He made his first grade debut with the Holy Cross team in June, and quickly put his name on everyones lips, scoring 5 tries in his teams huge win - the most scored by any player on debut. Holy Cross Ryde is a well known “Rugby League production line” producing household Rugby League names, Benny Elias, Paul Sironen, and current NRL stars Mitchell Moses, David Gower, Curtis Sironen and Junior Tatola.
Jordan has been blessed with blistering pace. He holds many Athletic records at Holy Cross including the 100m, 200m and Long Jump. Jordan’s next goal is to beat Darren Clarke’s long standing 400m record set in 1981.
Many of the NRL Clubs keen on securing Jordan, who recently turned 18, see similarities of Test winger Josh Addo-Carr skills in Jordan. He has blistering pace, athleticism and skill to make it into the NRL.
“Speed’ is an asset for any sportsman and in any sport. Most NRL Clubs sign the fastest runners available because it is well known you can’t coach speed.
Jordan already has offers on the table from Clubs for him to consider.
Mum Stacey said that Jordan was proud of his Hay heritage.
She says when the scouts ask him where he learned to play, he replies - being the proud kid he is - “the mighty Hay Magpies” and Bert Matthews was my coach”
..Good on ya Jordy, you’re making a lot of people excited about what the future holds for you
