No Melbourne are just on a whole other level when it comes to identifying talent.

This is the same Melbourne Storm that brought Luke Kelly and Billy Rogers into their system? The same Melbourne Storm that had George Jennings as a first choice winger for a year? Who gave Lumelume his only finals appearance? Who gave all these guys more than a dozen NRL games:

If talent identification was such a no brainer then why do half of all first rounders in the NFL draft are busts?

Because they don't come through the junior system at the NFL clubs, and so they don't get to see their professionalism and work ethic until after they are drafted.

Why do the best teams in the NRL develop the best talent?

Do they develop it or poach it?

I think talent identification is key to winning in this comp cause like slater said in the podcast I saw. He said he could have left Melbourne for more money but he always remembered Melbourne gave him his shot and he stayed loyal.

Even the top clubs lose plenty of young blokes. There's a huge list of premiership winners who left Melbourne for money. Penrith too. The difference is that they've already recruited more of them into their pathways, so they have a production line of replacements. Again, is it that they are identifying talent nobody else has, or do they just have recruitment/retention advantages? We already know Melbourne have been caught cheating the cap. Why would they need to if their talent identification is the magic bullet? Penrith lost a TPA because Maloney blabbed that he was waiting for it to be transferred to him from an outgoing Panther (Moylan?). This shit is rampant, but not evenly distributed, and explains why some players are so 'loyal' while others aren't. If we had more TPAs our players would be loyal as well.

We sign some of them, e.g. Lomax. It's not a secret who the good players are ffs. The problem is some clubs get them cheaper (under the cap) than everyone else, which means they can fit more quality players under the cap. It's the accounting that separates the top clubs from the rest, not talent identification. The 'right people' have ways of getting players to agree to cheaper deals (under the cap anyway).

Yes we do. If we had the right people in the retain and retention side of things we could sign quality players that other sides end up signing. So yeah if you're worth your paycheque as HOF then you can influence the quality of players other clubs put together.

Brisbane have a great squad that is severely underperforming. The quality of their squad shows their resources and systems are just fine. Their poor form this year points at a more temporary problem than systems or resources. There are broken relationships within the playing group.

This is likely why we are underperforming this year (plus all the injuries). Hopefully the new coach sorts it out, because our squad is fine, although not as good as Brisbane’s.

That was over 20 years ago though. The game is far more professional now and every club recruits from Queensland (and NZ and country NSW).

Retention yes, but identification implies clubs aren’t all aware of the talent pool. Just because we haven’t heard of a given player doesn’t mean the 17 clubs haven’t been tracking him since before he was 18. Guys like Mitch Moses and Boyd Cordner were poached from Harold Matts teams. It doesn’t mean their existing clubs (Parra and Newcastle) didn’t know how good they were.

There are always junior players that don't standout at junior level as being future stars for whatever reason and that's why players like Slater and others went under the radar and nothing has changed. But the better run clubs like Melbourne see something in them and know that if they put in all the intensive and right type of work into them and get their attitude right these types of players can find that consistency and quality that was always there but hidden a lot of the time out of them.

We struggle to even identify many of the better ones that are running around in our own nursery and end up losing many of the better ones that we do identify and put all the hard work into getting them NRL ready.

Yes I will concede that the professionalism has gone through the roof compared to 20 years ago, but for the smarter operators there are always bargains to be had as it is in all market places. But you need quality in the front office and all the way down to the ball boy if you want to consistently unearth and then hold onto your prized bounty.
