"There wasn't any need for North Sydney to go into administration, they were not insolvent," said Hill, who later headed the Save The Bears movement, which attempted to stop the ill-fated merger with Manly to form the Northern Eagles.
Except for, you know, the law. Trading while knowingly insolvent lands you in gaol. So there is that need.

"The reason they were not insolvent is because at the time the North Sydney Football Club, which declared itself insolvent, had six of the nine board members of the leagues club, which was awash with money."
No they were insolvent because their debts far exceeded their assets and that is simply insolvency and its illegal to continue operating. If you have "friends" or 6 of 9 board members on the board of a different company that has money doesnt make you not insolvent.

So basically if the stadium was ready on-time for start of 1999 my assumption is the Bears would have survived and parked themselves permanently as a single entity on the Coast.
No basically, if North Sydney could run an organisation without plunging into massive debt they would have survived. They went broke pure and simple and trying to rationalise with Central Coast stadium or SL is revisionism.

The Bears have no one to blame but themselves.

Who knows it may have been a meeting to talk to Gutho about extending on a team friendly deal, which if you see how he is so committed to the club may not be a stretch. Also, was it about how he fits into the scheme the new coach wants and if he is on board etc.

Danny Dribbler is a gossip hound these days, so tend to ignore him, his major role seems to be pumping up the tyres of anything Rooster or Wobbo related.

Article states that the Eels have no plans to offer Gutho an extension and that was reinforced in Thursday's meeting

Generally yes, but, well, not always. For e.g., there are several technically insolved companies listed and active on the ASX at any given point in time. How does this happen? Well their major creditors are in fact their major equity holders and provide a letter pledging to refrain from calling in their loans. Entities or individuals higher up the structure might also make other pledges via a letter of comfort or a cross guarantee that can allow a technically insolvent firm to continue trading.....so....it depends on the relationship between the entities and individuals and what promises have been made (on the paper that they're written on). Just ask Joe Gutnick and mates.

Actually, you can’t doubt the reach of rugby league in NZ, my son in law is a Kiwi from a town 2 hours from Christchurch. For years the All Blacks was the only game in town. Last year, 6 of his schoolmates flew to Sydney for the Warriors game agst Parra and confessed they now watch league over union. We’re talking about blokes in their 50s doing that and that’s how much the tables have turned.

League doesn’t have the foothold on the South Island that it does around Auckland, but it sells out when the Warriors play in Christchurch now, and when they played a trial in Greymouth too. Could be an interesting next few years if the Warriors continue their uptick.
My brother in law lives in Wellington and he’s a mad Warriors fan, but also still follows the Hurricanes and All Blacks.

You have to wonder what the long term on field strategy is without RCG and Gutho part of the team.

Huge risks involved.
Not sure the decision to allow RCG to go early was totally related to on-field strategy.
I am thinking that the post @Stevie recently put up about changes to preparation, training and culture probably wouldnt have been what RCG is looking for at this stage of this career.

Gutho contract stuff, isn't anything usual. Basically we won't offer a new contract until we see how he goes in his new role:

"The Eels retierated their desire to use Gutherson in a utility/roaming role next year and because of the uncertainty around how it would work, were unable to make him an offer."

it's a fair position, even for a club champion like Gutho.

He is 32 in 2026, any contract from then on for him is potentially a risk for any club. So you want to get a fair idea, how is playing before negotiating....

but the media, will turn it into an eels bashing exercise.....

Flanagan is part of the Newscorp mafia he is untouchable mate.

Sounds like he is building a Dads army for the over 30s comp.

Signing Gutho, Holmes, Cook i suspect Hunt will be moved on but if he did stay there going be one of the oldest teams in the comp next year.
