If Gutho isn't around in 2025, on top of the loss of RCG, I think anything higher than 12th position next year is a positive. I'm not expecting massive improvements next year, I think he needs 2025 to wash away the stench that has developed around the joint. Moving on Gutho, RCG and maybe Sivo and then Lane for 2026 should free up a heap of space to bring in some genuine talent and new blood for a decent crack in 2026 and 2027. I think JR should get at least until the end of 2027. Unless we finish stone motherless in 2025, 2026 and are still there halfway through 2027 - then it'll be time to reassess....
With our halves there is no way we should finish last irrespective of the rest of the roster. You have to remember that Moses was missing for about half the season this year and Asi was a project player who actually imo improved during the season.

There will be a bit of short term pain until we improve the rest of the spine with a rookie fullback and a more than serviceable hooker in Hands. There is no way we'll finish last and I'm even expecting a top 8 finish next year with a realistically reasonable expectation we'll challenger for a grand final the year after as both Penrith (loss of players) and Storm (spine players ageing) being less influential.

It's no risk imo.....

Gutho is done...he is on a massive decline, best to get rid of him asap and start the rebuild now...same with RCG......great player but we got the best years out if him....now it's time to plan ahead....

The most mind boggling thing in all this, is why these guys are signed on such massive overs.....another thing ive mentioned ad nauseam and that continually baffles me is how Paulo is on around 950k per season..truly unbelievable stuff.
To be honest I don't believe this figure and would assume on around same amount as RCG $700-800k.

Not sure I’ve ever mentioned this before. But an old lady randomly gave my mum a dusty unopened bottle of port as she had loads and was going to throw it out.

I have it saved in my man shed and think it’s amazing it’s called “Para” and it’s from 1947. Apologies if anyone has identified this before but I swore I’d crack it open in 22 if we won but it wasn’t to be. I mostly hate port however I’ve never cleaned the dust off and it’s a great addition besides by retro jerseys etc.
(FYI that’s a stock photo mine is in the cave and I’m lazy).

Is anyone a port drinker? Has the name / Vintage been mentioned on here before?
I'd be glad to take it off your hands. Has it been kept in a cool place all these years?

If anyone is bored over the off-season and loves watching old games of footy.

A chunk of this match was put on YouTube.

1986 when we beat Manly at Brookvale.
Love those deep back lines. Just watched the first 5 mins. Paul Taylor: four tackles in a row then kick pressure. Legend

So we weren't geniune contenders in 09 when we made the GF??

Or in 07 when we made the preliminary??

You’re off your head.
You’re the one saying we weren’t genuine contenders in 2022. If you’re basing it on the result of the grand final (a sample of one game) you’re off your head. If we were (or weren’t) genuine contenders, it was evident before the finals started. The ‘07 and ‘09 teams were just as ordinary as the ‘22 side.
Those years we could have beaten anybody on our day and didn't need the opposition to shit the bed so we could beat them, and had a team stacked with talent. I'd go as far as including 2010 as a genuine contenders even though we didn't make the 8...
The 2022 team could also beat anyone on the day. That preliminary final was a great comeback win, as underdogs.

And they’ve signed Papali’i. That’s where Fisher-Harris’ money would’ve gone.

JFH was costing around 900k
Papali'i would be maybe 550k

Luai was around 650k. Blaize would be 400k.

Tyrone May extension was around 450k that was terminated

Turuava was offered 350k. Probably was on 250k-300k

I reckon there is some upgrades sure but also a little money spare.

I’ll take that as an admission.
Take it however you want. You were smart enough to see that the sample was too small but not smart enough to identify that it applies to any other analysis.

Brian Smith's overall finals record is 15 wins from 28 games, a reasonable win rate in a reasonable sized sample. But that is close to the smallest sample that can tell us anything meaningful. Here's some mathematical evidence, shown by breaking Smith's win rate down into smaller (i.e. less meaningful samples):

Brian Smith finals weeksGamesWinsWin rate
All281554%
Weeks 1-2171271%
Weeks 3-411327%

The dopey dumb merkin assessment to draw from this is that Brian Smith was a week 3-4 choker but a week 1-2 specialist. It's f**king asinine. The better assessment is that 11 games is too small a sample, as it could easily be skewed by playing stronger opponents. In this case (and why I chose to split Smith's finals record this way) we know the opponents in week 3 and 4 are (in general) stronger than the week 1 and 2 opponents. So we know the explanation up front. But even if we didn't know the reason for supposedly significant results in this small sample of 11 games, the reason would still be there. It's not because Brian Smith is shit at coaching finals footy. If he was, he wouldn't have won half his 28 finals games. The 11 games in week 3-4 is skewed toward stronger opponents. Likewise Brad Arthur's 12 game finals record is skewed toward stronger opponents from week 1 through to week 4:

YearFinals weekOpponentEels differentialOpponent diff.Relative diff.Result

20221Panthers+119+306-187L by 19
20222Raiders+119+63+56W by 36
20223Cowboys+119+272-153W by 4
20224Penrith+119+306-187L by 16

This shows, with a more granular data than just W/L, that we actually underperformed in one of our finals wins (vs Knights) while overperforming in a number of close losses. We also faced clearly superior opponents in 7 of 12 finals matches (for a 1 from 7 record). We were superior in only 2 of the 12 (both wins). Against relatively evenly matched opponents we were 1 from 3. However the main point is that even a sample of 12 games is too small to be meaningful. Brian Smith's finals record is proof of this.

This will remain the case for future Eels coaches. Ryles' first half season (coincidentally also 12 games) will tell us nothing about his coaching ability. Neither will his first 12 finals matches.

The club has to wait for their decision.....
Yeah exactly. We want to retain a player (e.g. Tuilagi) for 2026 and he doesn't have a PO. We make an offer and then wait while he decides. It's no different than trying to retain Penisini, who does have a PO. We make an offer and then wait while he decides. The PO doesn't mean he has longer to decide. Our offer will be higher than the PO, as will any offer from rival clubs. Why would he knock either offer back just because he has the PO to sit on? If he waits too long to make a decision the new offers could get pulled at any time and all he is left with is the PO, which is less than the club was trying to pay him. In that case we win, because we got him for the value of the PO rather than the upgrade that he knocked back for whatever reason.
