Seriously you are hell bent on making this a huge problem. Basically he is off contract Nov 25.

Why does Roosters not have POs with Isaac Moses clients ? Because they won’t deal with him.

Clearly you prefer that his contract has no PO. Fine, it really doesn’t change anything.

It is a problem, that's why the club isn't offering them any more and trying to upgrade Moses to get rid of them

What you're saying is that we are in a position to offer an upgrade now. The fact that Moses was off contract end 26 or has a PO 26 is irrelevant.

Perhaps also, the Roosters have opted to go long term with Walker and that door has closed for Issac ?

Funny how all these POs came after reed, papalli, niukore, stone, kalfusi etc all walked.

It's as if the club panicked...
It's as if we were struggling to fit merkins under the cap and offering them player options instead of more money.

If we panicked, wouldn't we have just offered them more money to stay?

As in his own improvement or the teams improvement?? Space cadet needs to step up. He is basically our 2nd most important player now. Time to earn his paycheck on a consistent basis...

POs are used in just about every major sport in the world. They are not inherently dumb in and of themselves. But....when offering them you've got to factor in the rest of your player portfolio (i.e. how many other POs do you have, how many are exerciseable in Year X, at what date does the player have to choose to trigger the option, when do other players contracts expire). That's where we've rolled the dice and lost.
Have we lost? There is no evidence the options have hurt us. How many players activated their options ahead of the dismal 2024 season? As for the future options we are all whinging about, the seasons they will affect us in haven't happened yet.

I'd say in general the players would prefer more money instead of a PO. That's why it's a small minority of players that have them.

They're trying to extend him before he is off contract. The reason is that we have extra cap space now. The player options are part of the current contract, which ends when he signs a new one. The player wants more money rather than the options.

Well he basically had all of last season to run the side and failed massively.

So I think his value has dropped a touch tbh

Not arguing with you here, just sharing some thoughts - and speaking from observation of other sports (that have more transparent cap mechanics), a PO is usually a desperation move to entice a player to sign with a club, which leaves the player with control and the option to leave if they choose, or exercise and leave the club in a disadvantaged position. So broadly speaking, some of the more savvy GM's don't offer them. Ever. Others only in pursuit of big stars. I don't see it affecting the amount someone is getting paid, it is more about player or club control of contract.

In our backyard: I think for a guy like Mitch, 100% you give a PO to try and get him to come along/ stay with the club. This current discussion about removing it seems (to my ignorant brain) to be about commitment, both the club saying something. Eg. "hey man, we want to make you captain, how about showing us you plan on being here?" And Mitch then can say "sure thing dawgs". And have his agent remove the POs.
*may not be exactly what happens

Bottom line: PO is not a "discount" from the player, nor is it like a "contract extension offer early" - it is more than that when looking at other sports with more transparent salary cap mechanics. How exactly that relates to league is unclear to me, but it would be surprising if it were either of those first 2 vanilla options!

Well, you'll never know definitively. Where you are most likely to lose out is in the forgone budget flexibility when negotiating with other players (i.e. the ones not on existing PO's).

Ryles must be furious looking at his 2026 list with question marks next to brown, penisini and matterson...

would he though ? let's look at those 3 players

Dylbro: a very big wage and has not, in my opinion, reached his full potential as yet, so he needs to keep improving in attack. When Mitch was AWOL, he was nowhere near Mitch's level at No 7. Also a touch of the dickhead factor.

Penisini: Recently reported as having a significant front loaded deal and from what he produced last season, not even close to being worth it. He has shown potential but that's all, he needs to improve significantly.

Matto: I am a bit of a fan although some people don't want him here and he is on a decent wage also. Can be hot and cold and I think will play more of the middle forward with Ryles although I like him under Mitch's bombs on the edge. 30 years old, not too many years left and it will probably depend on how he goes this year as to whether he is worth his extension.

Of course a lot will depend on whether the options are MO, PO or CO but I don't think its all bad and may even work in our favour.

Mitch, on the other hand, is a different story at the peak of his career, so I can understand why we want to revise his deal.
