Rugby in this country seems to be in a death spiral. The worse it goes domestically the less interest there is for international fixtures, which means fewer kids want to play domestically, and so on.
And the only real avenue for talent was private schools and after blocking league for a long time, NSW private schools are now running league teams as well aren’t they?

Joey was a freak still the best player i have seen in my life.

I get why there is still conjecture on his immortal status when it comes to his off-field BS.

But on-field he was incredible he had the ball on a dime with his kicks weather it was a punt, banana, grubber, 40/20.

Passing game was no different.

Goal kicking and FG clutch kicking was incredible.

And he was an awesome defender which is often not stated enough. He could tackle and you rarely saw him get trampled over by bigger blokes.

Great player and yeah, fortunately for him they don’t give out awards for being a good sport.
I remember the game where he broke JT’s point scoring record against us at Parra stadium but Newcastle lost the game.
The club wanted to mark the occasion by giving him the game ball. The petulant twat was sulking in the sheds and refused to come out as JT (our coach at the time) was standing on the field waiting to give him the game ball.

Yeah i was there on the 30m line and saw him walk off.

I said to my parents as i was 11 or 12 then - Joey has spat the dummy after we flogged them and walked into the sheds.

The Hayne Plane announced himself as a player that night with 4 tries.

Interesting…Not only does the game need to service and repay its debts, meet players salaries etc, it would now have to provide to investors some return comparable to other investments on a risk adjusted basis.
That’s a big ask for a game that’s gone backwards financially and with viewers.
Let’s see how well the fund is subscribed. I’ll go out on a limb and say it’s a good opportunity for rich dudes that want to get some capital losses to offset their capital gains.

I don’t know how much is down to coaching (if you mean that in a tactical sense) but evidently some/a significant degree is down to the coach since the coach picks his assistants, the style he wants to play, season planning and has say in recruitment and retention. All those things add up, defensive results being one important outcome.
BA was probably too attached to certain players, staff and his preferences of how the team should play.
Ryles has shown with motivation and some sort of specific intent it’s possible to move players on, attract different staff and players with a view to playing a different style.
That style, the tactics, and the results aren’t in yet but it’s very exciting!!

I’m very excited too, as I am before every new season, but I wasn’t waiting for a new coach to be excited. We proved in 2019 you don’t need to sack the coach to improve dramatically, though it must be easier to clean the squad out with a new coach in place.

However, I believe our biggest improvement next year will come from the signing of Lomax, which occurred before Ryles even got the job. Twenty carries a week from Lomax will provide massive benefits to the team, including the pressure on our defence.

Our defence had been in decline since 2021. But the amount of times we capitulated under BA was infuriating and never got addressed.

We conceded 40 points 23 times under BA an average of once every 11.47 games during his tenure so that's on average twice a season we had 40 put on us.

And we also got pumped by 30+ point losses on 21 occasions so basically the same average as the 40+ points in a game

It simply isn't acceptable under any coach.

Our overall PPG in Defence in 264 games under BA was 21.26. Which isnt good enough to win a premiership.

I'll compare that to Brian Smith who had a similar tenure 243 games we conceded 40+ points on just 9 occasions.

And it wasn't until 2003 for it happen the first time which was Brian's 168th game in charge.

BA already 14 games by then we had conceded 40+ points or more in his first 168 games.
