Exactly. He was the one that broke the contract because he saw a 3 year deal on the table from a rival rather than sticking out the last year of his contract at the club he was captain for and trying to prove he was worthy of an extension...

I can't blame him for looking after his finances in the twilight of his career, tbh.

Gutho owes us absolutely nothing.

I'll call you out on this. For a depth player he played a hell of a lot of games for us, too much for a depth player that would normally only play when injury and suspension happens to another player.
I think BA said after signing him that he had a different body shape.
Not sure if he meant height.

Dylan Brown 'will be staying at Parramatta' as Eels star cops $1.2m truth bomb from NRL great

The Parramatta Eels are facing a tough dilemma with one of their star playmakers.

NRL greats Scott Sattler and Mat Rogers have reacted to reports Dylan Brown wants a $1.2 million deal if he leaves the Parramatta Eels and suggested the five-eighth isn't worth that price. Brown's agent caused a stir at the beginning of the year having reached out to rival clubs to see the playmaker's worth on the open market.
The five-eighth has up until round 10 of the 2025 NRL season to trigger his player option to stay at the club. Brown is on around $900,000 at the Eels and was expected to stay on for a number of years.
However, his agent managed to stir up media hype around the 24-year-old as negotiations with the Eels started to intensify. Brown has been linked to the Roosters with Trent Robinson short on NRL halves after Luke Keary's exit and Sam Walker's injury.

Although Brown could very well stay at Parramatta and just be looking to slightly boost his current contract. While new coach Jason Ryles and the board will be thrilled if this comes to fruition, Sattler isn't so sure Brown is worth the money being reported.

"The reports are there are some clubs are interested in him. I would be highly surprised. I think, that would be the management saying that to the media," Sattler said on SEN Radio on Tuesday. Sattler went on to compare Brown's situation to that of new Wests Tigers recruit Jarome Luai.
Dylan Brown receives a pass.

Dylan Brown (pictured) is reportedly receiving interest for around $1.2 million from rival clubs.

Luai will earn $1.2 million a season in his five-year deal at the Tigers. However, Luai is a four-time premiership winner with the Panthers and brings with him a wealth of experience to the struggling club. And Sattler compared the situation of what Luai had to deal with during Nathan Cleary's injury in 2024, to that of Brown's leadership when Mitchell Moses was out injured for the majority of the season.

Interesting that his salary reported here at around $900k is probably more correct than the $1m reported by most other media outlets.

So depth signings on 3 year deals is acceptable? It no wonder ba never won a comp, and had one of the worst finals winning records in history.
If he's good enough to be a depth signing at 26 why wouldn't he still be good enough at 29? He even got another NRL contract after leaving our club.

Yeah but Dec 2024

A shock clause has been revealed in Jarome Luai's five-year deal at the Wests Tigers.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, the contract has an option in Luai's favour for the final three years of his announced tenure at the club.

It means Luai could walk away from the Tigers after just two years and would be able to negotiate with rival NRL teams from November next year for the 2027 season.

So how come the NRL don't acknowledge this ?

The safe and easy option would have been to include Brown in the leadership group.

The fact Brown has been overlooked speaks volumes not only about Ryles opinion of Brown (at this stage) but also Ryles as a coach and leader.

You're confusing backups with depth players. They aren't the same. Backups play mostly reserve grade, whereas depth players could play more of either grade in a given year. Kane Evans had a similar squad status to Makahesi Makatoa and Luca Moretti. This is how a depth player's appearances will look:

MerkinYearsNRL gamesGames per year
Evans34314.3
Makatoa45614
Moretti22211

Backups look more like this:

MerkinYearsNRL gamesGames per year
Doorey2157.5
Greig4276.8
Ogden3144.7
Momoisea133
Murchie155
Rodwell351.7

Merkins can also see their squad status change after a couple of years. Cartwright went from a depth player ('21-'22) to a top 17 player ('23-'24), while Stone went from a backup ('18-'19) to a depth player ('20-'22). After 30 you might even see a player's status get a downgrade. Napa left the Roosters as a top 17 player in 2018 and returned as a backup four years later.

Gutho owes us absolutely nothing.
More to the point, we didn’t owe him anything, apart from transparency, respect and dignity in our dealings with him, which I think we gave him.
And while I’m thinking about it, I don’t think it was us playing out his contract negotiations in the media.
Ultimately both parties benefited from his time at the club and parted ways after discussions that appear to be have been carried out in good faith.
