NRL Market Watch: Raiders forward Trey Mooney meets with Newcastle Knights
Despite being contracted until the end of 2027, Raiders forward Trey Mooney has met with a rival club, after being given permission to explore his options
.The Knights have made a move to replenish their forward stocks by meeting with Raiders prop Trey Mooney and touring him through the club’s facilities.
Newcastle are eager to recover from the departure last season of Daniel Saifiti (Dolphins) and next season of Leo Thompson (Bulldogs), Kai Pearce-Paul (Tigers) and Sebastian Su’a (Dolphins) with Mooney emerging as a major target.
The Raiders are aware of Mooney’s visit to Newcastle on Tuesday, providing the 23-year-old permission to meet with rival clubs despite being contracted to the Green Machine until the end of 2027.
Equally, the Raiders are happy to retain Mooney, but also understand that the promising talent is craving more NRL football
The powerful ballrunner has remained patient behind a logjam of quality forwards at the Raiders and the Knights can offer Mooney a starting front-row spot alongside experienced prop Jacob Saifiti.
It’s understood Mooney met with Knights head coach Adam O’Brien, assistant coach Blake Green and club legend Danny Buderus during his tour of the club.
The Knights are adamant Mooney is yet to reach his potential as a forward and will be a major addition to their pack alongside 2026 recruits Pasami Saulo and Peter Hola, as well as multimillion-dollar recruit Dylan Brown.
