I remember in the 2022 GF our forwards had a comparable amount of post contact metres as penriths forwards but they had about 25 bends to our 5. Which told the story.
They had us for all the territorial stats. Metres, PCM, LB, TB, kick return metres. And obviously possession. Where we were comparable was play-the-ball speed. Maybe that's what you were thinking of?

Looking at those teams we only have 4 players from the gf side Most likely playing first grade for us this year.

While they have 9..

A lot of the time a fella is making metres after contact but it is really just that the defenders are wrestling him and the defensive line is under no stress from it - actually they are having a breather.
A line bend is when the middle forward gets to the defensive line and punches through it a bit (bends it) which usually causes some panic.
I would make it a seperate stat from post contact metres. Call the state a bend.

Play the ball speed

We sacked all those grand final players because they were shit players brought in by the old coach.
we had a team of big immobile forwards who couldn't cope with the new 6 again rule. We couldn't defend back to back sets on our line.

Arthur didn't evolve with the new rules, kept the team the same. Players like RCG, Lane and the Arthur era (Paulo) in the last few years were a liability in defence.

Ryles has the players looking fit and saved Paulo's career. I think Paulo can go around again for us possibly if he does well this season.

A coach that doesn't move with the times, is lost

Those shit players got us into our first grand final in 13 years ffs. We’re never going to build the best squad by trying to buy the players every other club wants.

Where did I call them "shit" players?

I pointed out they were players that couldn't adapt to the new rules.
Arthur had Paulo eating out of a KFC bucket daily, our most expensive forward wasn't even starting 2 years ago.
Ryles is well aware of the way the game needs to be played. The changes made to our defensive structure is looking like making us much more competitve. Players are looking much more fitter.

Everyone knows how the best teams play. That’s why the players they want are so expensive. Our only chance to compete against these teams is junior development (which is very expensive and time consuming) or doing something different, which is what we did in 2022. If Ryles gets us to a grand final by doing the same thing as everyone else then he’ll be a super coach. But I suspect it won’t happen until we can stack our squad with pathways graduates, when enough of the merkins are eventually ready for the top 17, and before they are poached by huge offers.

That was in response to the slower game after 2017. Alvaro was too lightweight for the modern game at the time. So was Mannah. That’s why we signed RCG and brought Paulo back. Leaving Alvaro at the weight he was in 2018 wasn’t going to help him keep up. You’ll note he didn’t do much after leaving the ‘poor coaching’ at our club either, while RCG finally reached his potential.

so what your saying is, Arthur adapted to the game in 2017 but didn't have the vision to do so after 2022

I blame the Supreme Court for us not having new stuff to talk about. Gone back to critiquing the correct playing weight for Alvaro FFS.
@Stevie you have any new goss to share?
