The issue with Twal is that, similar to Joffa, hes on starter money.Believe Alex $500k and Joffa $600k. They are both decent first graders but nowhere near that level. If they were both on $300-$350k they wouldnt be moved on. Seyfath can do a similar job to Twal on half the money.

Our main 3 props now are Klem, Stef and Pole. You cant have your 4th prop on $400k +. After them it will be Blore, Seyfarth, Fainux2, Kit who are more then sufficent as 4th/5th props all probably on less then $250k.

Very good points Vic.
It's a good thing I'm not in charge of the salary cap cause I'd bust the bank.

Twals on $500k shit! That’s a good centres $$ or wing.. I guess Madge saw that value in Twal back when no top players wanted a bar of us..

Mind u we’ll prob only get $300 maybe $350 of that back if he leaves. Which is what I thought he was on, after kilkenny blessed the WT forum with his life giving presence

Every team needs to spend a certain percentage of the salary cap.
If we cant attract true high value players, we end up signing average players on high values not to get the fine.
Its f**ked and I think its one of the main reasons why bottom teams cant turn it around.
Weve finally got rid of the high level duds and now we are obviously clearing out our overpriced depth players.

In my view, we should probably have 6 or so highly paid players.
Another 10 or so on good money.
Thats your run on squad.
To do this, we need to pay the other 14 as little as possible and find the balance between talent and price.

Why the Wests Tigers have reached out to Michael Cheika
By Michael Chammas and Danny Weidler
Updated September 19, 2023 — 6.44amfirst published at 5.00am

The Wests Tigers have reached out to former Wallabies coach Michael Cheika to gauge his interest in working in rugby league when his commitments with Argentina end after the Rugby World Cup.

While former player Mark O’Neill appears the frontrunner for the vacant general manager’s role, the Tigers have sounded out Cheika about potentially linking with the joint venture.

Club management on Monday night put a recommendation to the board for the club to pursue O’Neill as general manager, but are no certainties to lure the former premiership-winning player away from the Parramatta Eels, where he performs a similar role.

If negotiations with O’Neill fall through, the Tigers are expected to revisit the possibility of having Cheika on the books in some capacity.

Cheika, who led Lebanon to the quarter-finals of last year’s Rugby League World Cup in the United Kingdom, comes highly regarded by club legend and assistant coach Robbie Farah.

He is also related to injured Tigers star Adam Doueihi, who is hopeful of returning from an ACL injury midway through next season.

The former Australian rugby union coach has formerly worked with Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson and impressed with his knowledge of the game during his stint as Lebanon coach.

He has indicated a desire to work within rugby league but has been limited due to the 18-month contract he signed with the Pumas which doesn’t expire until the end of Argentina’s World Cup campaign in France.

As for O’Neill, the Tigers have held informal discussions with him about his interest in returning to the club.

One of the driving forces behind the push for O’Neill is his former teammate Benji Marshall. The new head coach has given the Tigers his support to lure O’Neill back to the club.

O’Neill’s relationship with Marshall extends back two decades. Before Marshall’s retirement in 2021, O’Neill told the Herald he once told Marshall, ‘You’re not the king’ after watching the then-teenager sign a crown above his signature.

Marshall respects his 2005 premiership-winning teammate, who is 10 years his senior.

O’Neill has expressed his interest in discussing the role but is currently employed by the Eels, where he has been general manager since 2018. He doesn’t have a contract with the Eels for a specified time frame and would be free to leave immediately if he opts to sign with the Wests Tigers.

The Tigers haven’t had a general manager for the past 12 months after deciding to appoint Tim Sheens as head coach. The club opted against bringing Sheens back into the administration role despite the veteran coach signalling interest in doing so after being replaced as head coach.

The previous general manager, Adam Hartigan, is now working with Phil Gould at the Bulldogs.

The Tigers also had discussions with Knights head of football Peter Parr, who decided to remain in Newcastle despite a third party organising a meeting.

So we are signing people who are mates with a person who shouldn't have a job with us in the first place.
The sooner the Nrl step in to fix this cluster f**k the better.

Agreed. Bringing back Sheens was bad enough, but now it’s pretty clear that this jobs for the boys bullshit will continue ad nauseam unless the NRL takes action.

They should withdraw the licence and rights to the brand from Wests Tigers Pty Ltd unless Parramatta style governance reforms are implemented.

Failing that, give the rights to the Easts Tigers on the condition that they play one match a year at Leichhardt.

Maybe we should wait to see if it fails first?
Its not unusual to appoint ex-players into management and coaching roles.

Tigers’ bold bid to recruit head of football as Cheika placed firmly in powerbroker’s sights

He is currently coaching Argentina in the 2023 Rugby Union World Cup, not 12 months after leading Lebanon to its best ever result at the Rugby League World Cup at the end of last year.

Andrew Voss believes Cheika would be a big “asset to the game of rugby league” and worth a club taking a flyer and hiring him in some capacity.

“I am firmly in the Michael Cheika camp. I think he would be an asset to the game of rugby league, on what I witnessed at the Rugby League World Cup last year,” Voss said on his SEN breakfast show.

“All the feedback I got from people like Mitchell Moses (Lebanon halfback) who said he’d never heard as impressive a speaker at halftime, pregame, build up than Michael Cheika.

“He’s got a bit to offer as a man-manager.”
