Rumours (signings, sackings & other NRL stuff)

It comes as the Tigers confirmed they had engaged former NRL chief financial officer Tony Crawford to put the microscope over the club following a second straight wooden spoon season.

Crawford, who is now employed by Benchmarking Matters, will head the review after more than 2000 supporters signed a petition for a sweeping probe into the governance of the club.
What a waste of time and money. It's clear this guy is coming to look at the financial success of club and that's it. And he'll give them a big tick of approval because the club is doing well financially.

He's clearly not qualified to review the on-field lack of success the football team has been having for a very long time. That's what the fans want. A winning team.

Another bit of brilliant deductive reasoning from Lee and the board. A sign at the game about Pascoe? The fans must really be concerned about the club's financial position. Let's get an accountant and business consultant in to do a thorough review. f**kwit.

Crawford will probably get paid $100K for this. Something the fans couldn't give 2 f**ks about. He's probably mates with at least 2 board members..........Might even own a fedora

Tigers launch external review after miserable season; Manly prop on cusp of exit
By Adam Pengilly
September 14, 2023 — 7.45pm

A powerful group of Wests Tigers owners met with frustrated supporters before commissioning a review into the governance of the embattled club, which could have major implications for how it is run.

Less than a fortnight after their second straight wooden spoon, the majority shareholders in the Tigers announced on Thursday they had contracted ex-NRL executive Tony Crawford to put the club’s structure under the microscope.

The independent review is the most significant step taken by the club after claiming a second straight wooden spoon. No timeline has been given for a report to be tabled.

But amid further changes within the football department - the Tigers have told Alex Twal he is free to leave before the end of his contract and assistant coach David Furner has been axed with a year left on his deal - the spotlight will now fall on its off-field operations.

The fact the review has been instigated by the Holman Barnes Group, the trading name for Western Suburbs Leagues Club Limited, which owns 90 per cent of the Wests Tigers, is the first sign of a potential summer of change looming at the joint venture.

“The board of the Holman Barnes Group has commissioned an independent report into the governance of Wests Tigers,” a statement provided to this masthead said.

“The board would like to thank all members and fans of Wests Tigers for their feedback in relation to this matter, especially all those that took the time to sign the petition that was submitted through the hosts of Wests Tigers podcast. While we are unable to set a specific timeframe for the completion of the report, we are hopeful it is completed in a timely manner.”

Gary Barnier, the former chief executive of Australia’s largest aged care chain and managing director of Cooperage Capital, will join Crawford for the review.

The Tigers have faced increasing public protests from frustrated fans, whose side has missed the NRL finals for 12 straight seasons and have Benji Marshall taking over as head coach next season.

Supporters vented their fury at chief executive Justin Pascoe, in particular, with banners inside stadiums during the final weeks of the season.

On the field, the Tigers are preparing to move on one of their longest-serving players after this masthead revealed rival clubs had been alerted to cult hero Twal’s availability despite having another year to run on his deal.

According to club sources speaking on the condition of anonymity due to the private negotiations, the Sea Eagles had expressed an interest in adding the Lebanese international to their roster.

It comes as Manly prop Sean Keppie became the latest player to be given the green light to speak to rival clubs despite being under contract on the northern beaches until the end of 2026.

The Sea Eagles only upgraded Keppie’s contract late last year, but he’s landed on the radar of the Tigers as both clubs seek to reshape their forward packs.

Furner’s time at the Tigers is over after Marshall told the veteran coach he wouldn’t be required to finish the last 12 months of his deal as an assistant, with ex-South Sydney staffer John Morris arriving at his old club.

Furner, the former Raiders and Leeds coach has admirers at the Rabbitohs, was discussed internally at South Sydney as a potential replacement for Sam Burgess, who walked out on the club with one match left of the regular season.

But NSW Cup coach Joe O’Callaghan is considered the favourite to step up to Jason Demetriou’s staff after leading the Rabbitohs to the second tier grand final on Sunday week.

Meanwhile, the Tigers insist they have no intention of letting schoolboy sensation Lachlan Galvin leave the club before next season after the playmaker starred in Westfields Sports High School’s national title win on Wednesday.

Galvin will move into the Tigers’ top 30 next year.

Twal has the impact on games of a player in a bottom 8 team….He averages 1.3 tackle breaks per game ranking him 184th in the nrl..

Benjis not interested in just getting into the 8.. He wants the ultimate prize..He’s been part of the game long enough and rubbed shoulders with enough of the best, to know the players that will make his cut, to achieve his goal. ..Twal isn’t one of them despite his defence, effort rah de rah..

Benjis wife Zoe is in his ear daily, telling him the power to have it all is within. A pretty amazing woman. Maybe too much for some but she would prob have a big influence. This mindset is what has been behind all his player /staff manoeuvrings. To ensure he’s surrounded by winners. So far the moves have all been strong. Including Fulton who he hadn’t planned on, but that was a lucky addition. He’ll take that. Those two will be fine now with their Pisces connection. From the podcast Fulton looks like he’s strong, but he’s not overly confident or loud and he knows when to shut up and be humble in his job, and has that rare but crucial soft touch, as does Benji, in his dealings when needed. Typical pisces.

We can’t be fkn admiring a player so much coz of his defence etc that it clouds our judgement on how far he can take us..

Perspective. He (Twal) may be a club/ fan favourite who gives his all each game but as you say WA Tiger, that impact is of a player who has played in a team in the bottom 8.
The Tigers need better.
Seyfarth though IMO is worth keeping and just because there’s something about his efforts.

Not sure if there are any available from the released players in the list here though.

TWT instagram saying that Seyfarth is going to reject the Dogs offer and stay with us. Good news, if true imo.
Also
Manly’s Sean Keppie is being looked at to join the club.

I’ve seen it too mate.. I was watching closely for a part of one recent game and seyfarth was the only player in the whole team that when he got the ball just ran at the opposition as hard as he could..every other player, forwards included, did this stupid jump in the air Benji style, like they were trying to sidestep a fkn wall of players.. meaning they didn't run as far and didn’t hit as hard..

They can’t run without legs, of course, if he breaks your arms while you are trying to tackle him, also means you can’t tackle without arms.hahaha

So we sack Furner with a year left on his deal and sign Morris for four years. I should put my hand up for a job coaching us. You'd be on great odds to be sacked early and get a payout. Money for jam!

Small loss v massive gain
Unproven v Proven at the top level & recently

& Furner had a “verbal altercation” with Robbie after the warriors game..Da! Close the door on your way out

Couldn't be bothered starting another thread.
I'm switching backwards and forwards between NRL, AFL and cricket.
Great try by Melbourne's winger Will Warbrick at the death, he's a lump of a lad and a real bolter this year.
In the AFL, I can't believe how some of these players can't kick a punt straight. This is a game where players kick a lot... confusing.
In the cricket I don't understand what one day games don't have more test cricketers, some of these players are rucked.
