Ryles an "Origin certainty"?

From a story on Fox Sports:
http://foxsports.news.com.au/story/0,8659,9449417-23209,00.html

St George Illawarra pair Jason Ryles and Trent Barrett and Newcastle forward Ben Kennedy weren't considered for Country because they are near certainties to play Origin for NSW when the interstate series kicks off on May 26.

----------------------------
Jason Ryles? Are my eyes deceiving me? COME ON! If I was any other NSW-eligible prop I would be spitting chips. Ryles has played about 40 minutes of football in a year, and all of a sudden he's a certainty for Origin? What about those props busting their guts week in week out and doing it well? Guys like O'Meley, Davico, O'Hara, Woolnough and so on. Possibly all of these guys will miss out on Origin selection, while the 40-minute man is almost certain to be selected.

WHAT A LOAD OF CRAP! Origin selection is a joke.

Ryles was one of the most damaging props in the game. And IMO he will return to that state in the near future.

However, to say he is an "Origin Certanty" is an insult to our game.

Sportsjock, nqboy, I'm not saying he isn't a good player. However, he has barely played any football over the past year and there are others who are more deserving at the moment.

Are you saying that an international prop like Jason Ryles isnt in the category of Webcke?

You try and tell me that QLD wouldnt pick Shane Webcke at the drop of a hat if he is fit and raring to go even if he has been out for a few months?!

Theres still another couple of game up Ryles belt before Origin - he won't let anyone down, and his ability deserves the same respect Webcke would be afforded for Qld.

If fit ( which he obviously is by being named in the Dragons team ) - he IS DEFINITELY an ORIGIN certainty for NSW.

Dude, when its someone of his calibre, throw form out the window.

Its just tough luck that the other more deserving props have to compete with one of the best props in the game for the NSW role - because bottom line is, when one of the games best props is fit , he gets the role regardless of who may be more deserving!

And in this case, Ryles, proven state and Australian champion, should be in front of any other prop in the NSW selection states if he is 100% fit.

It's not a few months. It's NINE months. Ridiculous - will he even be fully match fit?

Dont count last year. This CURRENT season is a FEW MONTHS old. Everyone stopped playing over summer mate - its irrelevant.

I know he has been out of action for 9 months total, but in that time there has been an offseason where everyone stopped playing, and I think he showed Saturday night where he is at with his football - dont you?

Brent Tate was out of action for a similar time. He was back barely two games, and playing for AUSTRALIA - and how is his form?!

Ryles can do the same.

Yeh...um it's called Pre season training. Do you think he was able to?

Big difference between playing in a side with the dragons dominating the sharks, and playing origin.

I think the crazy thing is that Ryles really wasnt that great on the weekend, its just because of his reputation people searched for any positive they could find. If an unknown player did exactly what Ryles did on saturday he would still be an unknown.

Having said that, Ryles is one of the better props running around at top fitness, if he can show he can still do what he used to do then he will be in the running

No surprises really, I don't think he's as good as some people make him out to be. I prefer Bailey over him anyway.

f**k oath he has been able to! He has spent almost 7 months doing " pre season " training, lots of fitness, loads of weights while he was simply waiting for clearance to play again.

He is far from unfit, and when a player is injured, they don't stop training altogether. Even blokes with serious knee injuries hit the weights hard core.

Ryles will do the job. Bottom line.

He still hasnt been named in the NSW team yet. Come back after the Origin series, and see how we agree then.

I don't know about Origin certainty. It seems to me that he's been pressured into returning to first grade and is more vunerable to injury now... so who knows what could happen.

Contact? There are aspects of his game has hasn't been able to practic. Undeniable, otherwise he would have been playing earlier.

SportsJock I don't think many people are doubting him being fit in time for origin, but why shouldn't he prove himself in the Coty-Country game like everyone else ? He sure could use some match fitness.

This question was answered in the papers yesterday if anyone read them. the respective selectors simply were asked to "...take the clubs into account. We don't want some players with injuries to risk missing State Of Origin. We decided to give some young fellas a chance" (Ricky Stuart's words). This special injury exemption applied to Craig Wing, Ben Kennedy, Craig Fitzgibbon, Trent Barrett and Jason Ryles. Josh Perry, cleared of an arm injury, was considered, but missed out. He appears to be at long odds of retaining his Origin jersey.

1. When fit, I think he's probably one of the best 2 props in Aust (Webcke) - with Luke Bailey a close third. Ryles adds a nice balance when paired with someone like Webcke.
2. If I was St George/Ill I'd be furious if he was selected - he's hardly played a game, and wasn't it origin last year when he was hurt?? He should be given time to develop fitness, and presumably strength in his shoulder - he's young, there's no rush, and there are other deserving props around.
