Read this and tell me we Mary is not in disarray. Each day I wait for news of his sacking. He got himself into this mess and is now blaming the salary cap as the reason he can't coach.

PLEASE SACK HIM, SOMEONE JUST SACK HIM!

St George Illawarra coach Paul ‘Mary’ McGregor can’t dump disappointing Dragons
JULY 16, 20168:13AM

ST GEORGE Illawarra coach Paul McGregor admits second tier salary cap pressure is preventing him from swinging the axe on his underperforming side.

For the second time in as many outings, the Dragons had 30-plus points put on them in their 32-12 defeat to the Gold Coast at Jubilee Oval on Friday night.

MATCH REPORT: Titans thrash woeful Dragons

Not only did it send them tumbling out of the top eight, it sent alarm bells ringing as they copped yet another resounding loss. They have now lost four of their last seven, letting in 30 points or more on each of those occasions which sees them hold the second worst differential (-145 points) in the competition.

And of those three wins in that period, two have come against sides severely weakened by Origin — North Queensland and Melbourne — while the other was against last-placed Newcastle.

McGregor labelled the performance as unacceptable however admitted his ability to axe underperforming troops was limited because they had already stretched the second tier salary cap.

“We always talk about that but it’s very hard when you’ve got a salary cap and second tier cap as well,” McGregor said. “We’ve already used 27 players so it’s very hard to change it around too much.

“A lot of things come into play there so we’ll just have to sit back and have a look.

“But to ask if I’m happy with tonight — no, I’m not.”

McGregor said the rest of his side needed to take a leaf out of Tyson Frizell’s book, who was the lone shining light despite backing up just two days after State of Origin III.

“He’s certainly a player who can sit in that shed and be proud,” McGregor said.

“The challenge for them is to put in some effort like he is. “It’s good for a young man to go out on a big arena on Wednesday night, with all the emotion behind it, and back it up a couple of days later.”

The Dragons were severely weakened by the loss of Benji Marshall (hamstring) and Josh Dugan (broken jaw) during the week but McGregor said that was no excuse.

He said he expected Marshall to be fit to face his former side Wests Tigers next Sunday.

We have 29 players listed as being members of our playing roster, inc Carr YKG, Hutch, Quinlan, Milne, Havili, McCrone, Lui and McCarthy who have had little or no time in 1st grade this year. We also have Mose and Creagh with long term injuries and Marshall whose been in and out of the team.

So I cant really understand that we have used our 2nd tier cap already........on who? Quinlan (2 games), Milne (1 game) Lui and Havili????? or is Marketo on the 2nd tier and burning it each week (now that wouldn't surprise me)

And right on cue the excuses roll out, it's not his fault, but rather the effort and execution of the players...if he hadn't lost their support before hand, he certainly has after the presser... this club is a circus run by the clowns!

So besides his own failings as a coach Mary has simply indicated our recruitment team is to blame in the way it's handled over recruitment, and injured players in relatation to the salary cap.

How many fringe players chewing our salary cap have not seen first grade?

Another point, Gould and Johns on nine's telecast said our passes looked slow, our play too predictable. WE CAN'T ARGUE WITH THAT! I want Mary and coaching staff get that feedback.

Our NSW Cup and NYC Holder cup teams are scoring way more points and tries. Different coaches
with attacking mentalities. RIGHHHHHHHHHTTTTTTTTT.

I'm prepared to chip in and pay the fine for salary cap breaches if it means I don't have to endure what I have the last 2 rounds.

Saints by the sounds of it are broke and probably can't afford to sack Mary and get a new coach unfortunately.

If that is the case I cannot see why they don't demote him to coaching a lower grade side and promoting Demitriou to head coach. The only downside to that this the lower grades are doing well and which ever team Mary gets demoted to will suffer.

Surely the evidence is there to show he clearly is not cutting the mustard this season. You think they would have learned from Price that they should not hang on to long to a coach that is performing. It just increases the damage already made and takes longer to repair. Now they still have some chance of making the 8 and seeing who is worth keeping and who isn't. Clearly on last nights effort I would keep Benji and get rid of Widdop and McCrone. Put Hutch/Wallace/Nona at 7 and Benji back to 6 where he belongs.

What is happening with the guy from WI? Is he going to buy the club and pump in some cash or what. His first job would be to payout Mary.

Mary always seems to have an excuse at the ready. Usually its the " two tries from kicks" lol, like that makes it better. How the f**k are we going to sign anyone decent o come here? Honestly what decent player would want to come and play in that structure? None thats how many, we will continue to sign peoples scraps and fringe first graders. You would have to be a deadset moron to want to play under Mary and the structures he has in place, not to mention the players he's assembled.

Mary screwed up by signing all these "depth" players, this is why we have this problem.

You cannot just Sack a coach.

You need to pay out his contract, the Dragons don't have the money to pay out McGregors' contract.

The thing with McGregor is that he is deluded he talks like he is a gun coach with all his glib little sayings he has ,trying to sound like he has been coaching for a long time .

His only acknowledgement of his failure to coach any semblance of a well drilled competitive squad is to say it is not good enough ,(well MARY how insightful),then launches into the excuse book ,which is getting longer by the week .The bullshit about the first try coming from a kick,we trained for it ,really ,did not look that way.
Now it's the salary cap as well and injuries of course, Dugan makes a difference but certainly not enough to turn this crap around and well, Benji, he is finished adds very little to the rabble and the others haven't been there all year .

There seems to be very little ownership taken by McGregor or Widdop and for mine they show no contrition and display very little willingness to admit fault. The team in itself lacks any desperation in it's playing group to win when compared to most of the other sides and the hunger just isn't there, it's like they are heading out on the field prepared to do the least amount required to gain their paycheck each week, not good enough for professional sportsmen.

It's the old story ,until you admit there is a problem it can't be rectified and prattling on about making the 8 all the time is a smokescreen, seriously we would be the worst performing team in the NRL at the moment ,time to look in the mirror Mary . Resign.

The whole joint needs to be cleaned out from the front office to the roster, and hire people who don't have the pathetically inept inbred culture that has pervaded the club.

We need to give Mary more time, he can coach. We all need to be patient
Your kidding it doesn't take 3,4 or 5 years to make a coach, back in 1989/90 Craig Young failed with the Dragons as coach finishing down the bottom of the ladder.
They appoint Brian Smith 1991, in his first year the Saints finished in 6 position just missing out on the top 5, 1992/93 we finished 2nd making the GF with a no frills teams..so if Mary was going to be a top notch coach we would be comfortably sitting in the top 4!
Let history repeat with Tony Smith being appointed as head coach but this time winning back to back premierships!

Think Hail Mary joined today, so welcome to the forum firstly, but cant agree with your comment...

I defended him for too long, and has not shown enough to justify his position mate.

Nice bloke and all.. out of his depth.
