Being "mediocre" really sucks........................in a lot of ways, its better to be real bad for a season and then management has no choice but to make changes or it will impact on them as well.

Agreed we need a coach and most would be an upgrade, but I think we really need to "clean out" our playing roster under a new coach and pretty much start again as the nucleus we currently have (even under a new coach) doesn't seem to possess the ability to consistently play at any kind of high level.

With this in mind, I'd like to suggest "moving" our so called marquee players and start giving our up and coming juniors a try?! The people I'd consider moving on are as follows:

  • Dugan (yes Dugan!);
  • Creagh;
  • Farrel;
  • Marketo;
  • Lafai;
  • Marshall;
  • Thompson;
  • Widdop (yes Widdop!);
  • Rein.
I don't profess to have all the answers (ha, far from it), but the Manly debacle made me realise that I'd prefer to support a team that gave 110% every weekend were young and enthusiastic and made us proud that they were wearing the Red V, than what we are experiencing at present.

That said, all this is great, but without changes in the back office and breaking up the "old footballers glee club" that current runs the administration, I feel we are in for much of the same! Here's hoping the private investor rumored to now own 50% really ROCKS THE BOAT!

One lone voice, crying in the wilderness..........................

All but Dugan

What was this second Grand Final year? He only made the Grand Final in one year, 2011. So already you've demonstrated poor rugby league knowledge.

Ivan Cleary has demonstrated that when given the proper squad he can take teams deep into the finals, he's done this at two different clubs. His time at Penrith was severely hindered by injury.

Since when is being a "dud" considered average.

My bad, for some reason I thought he coached Warriors in 2002, but it was Daniel Anderson. So he's made 1 GF - hardly inspiring stuff is it?

He's taken 2 teams "deep" into the finals. Coached at 50% wins for Warriors and 49% for Panthers. That's almost a perfect example of the word average. Injuries are a poor excuse for his time at the Panthers - even Mary could make a valid case that this season has been affected by injury. It doesn't excuse crap coaching though.

Being Average isn't considered being a dud. An average coach doesn't take two different clubs deep into the finals, and one to a grand final, especially when one of those teams was the Warriors. The Average coach doesn't win a coach of the year either.

Look at Brad Arthur, people consider him a good coach even though his win percentage is 47%, Win percentages are more nuanced than that.

Injuries aren't a poor excuse in Penrith's case, Penrith suffered through one of the worst injury affected seasons in the competitions history.

I think Cleary is a good coach, but I also reckon it's wrong to think that Penrith's injury woes are not due in part to Cleary. He is responsible for the training regimes, the drills, the player rotations etc. He had a young squad and he worked them too hard. No other club has experienced the carnage that Penrith went through that season. I don't think it's a coincidence.

He's a dud. You're taking the only 2 years out of his entire coaching career where he achieved something respectable and proclaiming him above average as a coach? On your logic, Ricky Stuart & Michael Hagan are good coaches because they had one good year, whereas Ricky had Phil Gould pulling the strings all year, while Micky had Andrew Johns at the peak of his career.
Injuries aren't an excuse - have a look at Melbourne this year - the team they've fielded most weeks is nowhere near full strength, making do with rookies and cast offs from other clubs. They've managed quite ok. Why? The Coach isn't a dud.

Your criteria of what makes a good coach seems to be a bit all over the place. Black and white answer, what is a pass mark for a good coach in your opinion?

Black & White - Consistent high achievement (regular semi final appearances) and an ability to avoid regular poor performances.

A 50% win average for a coach is going to see his team perennially sit around struggling for eighth spot year in, year out, which is what Cleary coached teams do. Actually that's probably being generous to Cleary as his teams rarely make the finals.
A good coach is someone who can get their team to play consistently well, week in, week out over a substantial amount of time - i.e..successive years. Examples - the obvious ones are Bennett, Bellamy, then a tier below that would be Robinson, Hasler & Maguire. All of these coaches have been able to get their teams to perform at high levels over substantial periods of time, playing semi final footy regularly. Flanagan is showing some good signs of consistent success over the last few seasons & Paul Green is doing well obviously so far.
Below that level would be coaches like Brad Arthur & Anthony Griffin - coaches who are yet to attain consistent results over longer periods of time, but have their teams playing good competitive football and moving up the ladder (ignoring Parra's loss of points for cheating).
Jury's out on poor Nathan Brown until he has a team.
Underneath that are the duds - Mc Gregor, Taylor, Henry, Mc Fadden, Barrett & Ricky Stuart.

Every week I hope for something different from the Dragons and every week about 20 minutes in I realise we are as lacklustre and disjointed in attack as ever. Then it becomes a matter of our defence holding up and whether we can can grit out a try and maybe kick enough penalties to grind out a win. Win, draw or lose I am feeling empty and unsatisfied as a fan who expects the best.

It is boring.
We will NEVER attain anything more than mediocrity.
It is embarrassing.

I have never wanted to look away from a Dragons game, not even 70-10, until last game where I had to switch off at half time.

We have had a succession of two incapably hopeless rookie coaches to thank for this. We could sign Cronk, Hayne, Norman and Foran in the off season and nothing will change. This guy doesn't have what it takes to have success in the NRL. No simpler way to put it. I want us to remember this when the team run out tomorrow night. Wait for Mary's excuses after tomorrow's game - "No Dugan, no Marshall..". It actually doesn't matter if they play the way his game plan is set up.

SACK THE COACH.

Is it rude to bump your own post?

Mcgregor has to get the sack now. To bring lafai in after dropping him makes me laugh . The ball work is a dis grace and now the defence has fallen apart. He has lost the confidence of the team.

Do the honourable thing and resign McGregor.

Admit you tried but you're just not up to it........and do not bloody recommend some one else gets promoted from within.

Doust is killing this club.

McGregor gets no pressure from anyone. I have never heard anyone in the media point the finger at him. Why can't someone say it like it is.

This is the worst side I can remember. This is the worst coaching performance in the history of the Dragons.

How he sleeps at night is beyond me. Obviously everyone else is to blame for his ineptitude.

If you ever had pride in the jersey, stand down right now. Just don't let another f*&ckwitt from the stable take control just like you did.

No one in this side seems to know what the game plan is.no one is showing any confidence. No one is improving. MacGregor must fall on his sword.
