No. One win doesn't negate the rest of the rubbish. Don't jump to conclusions.
I'm no fan of McGregor. But we've got him. Who would you prefer in charge?
Your question is an oft used response to the question of the coach.
I suggest that in fact it is the incorrect question to ask.
The better question is that on his performances how did he retain his job last year?
The issue gets clouded by us debating who is available etc when in fact it is not for us to answer the question as to who should have replaced him it was up to our BOD to seek and secure an alternative which they clearly failed to do.

I was against his initial appointment. I was against his subsequent resigning.
However I'm not one to cry over spilt milk when there's not a dang thing I can do about it. Besides, we just had a good win and I'm a happy Dragons fan. For now.

But let's pretend for a minute that what we think makes a difference.

Who would you prefer in charge?

I was happy to see Mary get credit for our early rounds. I wasn't happy to see his contract extended before necessary mainly because I wanted to see how he reacted with a run of losses. As far as I'm concerned he didn't react too well(ultra conservative selections, continuing to select players out of form, poor use of the bench etc). That showed me he didn't learn(or was perhaps too stubborn to change).Yesterdays win great but it was more to do with a poor Manly and some individual brilliance(let's not forget Dufty wasn't getting a game but Mary's hand was forced). As for the Bellamy analogy well they weren't 'future immortals' when they started. Bellamy developed them which is something that Mary could have done with Bird but didn't see the potential or could have helped Dugan develop a passing game but hasn't.
He should still be coaching for a new contract in my eyes because all I want is the best for our club.
nailed it!

I think JD would have been a great option.
Given his results, he would have been excused to thinking he had a chance at the top job.
Unfortunately the Old Boys club made sure that wasn't going to happen.
Anyway that is who I would like to be in charge.

Firstly, let me begin by saying yes I'm a glass half-full kind of person but I don't have blinkers on.

1) lapses like that are definitely not acceptable, especially if it's a regular occurrence (knights game too). But I'm actually certain that every other club in the comp has had a defensive lapse at some point this season. I'm more interested in how we responded to the defensive lapse.. and that was by scoring another 22 unanswered points against a top 4 side.

2) covered above. But agree not acceptable to be a consistent problem.

3) I believe every coach, especially top ones would've made changes. McGregor actually made a change after their 3rd try, where Vaughan came on for Packer and he himself scored about 5-7 minutes later. Good change.

4) a lot of players get their first game through injury rather than having your International fit. McGregor could've easily gone with Nighty at the back and Mann on the wing with Dufty at 17. The fact he didn't either means one of two things - he learnt. Or he knew he had given Dufty enough time in NSW cup that he'd now be ready to step up straight into the starting side. The host point I'm not fussed on, he is a bench player for us and steps up when a starting forward is out. Mary hasn't been good at blooding backs, but he has actually done well with the forwards.

5) let's find out in about 20 hours.

6) if Thommo is fit, why not let Packer have a break. But possibly like many other players he is able to play through injury or even refuses to be benched.

7) maybe he has learnt? Or is improving his game plans.
I have faith what Mary chooses to do regarding dufty/Dugan is the best decision even though I would put dufty at fb.. I'm confident Mary knows much more then most if not all the people on this forum when it comes to rugby league knowledge..

Maybe so but the people on the forum do not select the team. Mary does so he is in charge.
With that comes responsibility and accountability whereas we can all have an opinion that doesn't really mean much in the scheme of things.
I find it interesting that you yourself would choose Dufty at FB and you have every confidence in McGregor's knowledge and experience.
Yet it took him 20 rounds and some injuries for him finally to make the "right" decision and give Dufty a go.
I honestly can't see where all your confidence in Mary comes from...

Accountability for putting a decent team together?, btw he did take accountability for last year and made the changes required in the off season to get a competitive team on the park. People say dufty should of been getting played earlier but I say he couldn't off had a better debut and his confidence is gonna be through the roof because of it. Iv done my research on Mary. He was a smart footballer, and he's got a a lot of respect from the players, he holds himself well and If he is the super coach I'm dreaming he might be the good news is he don't wna coach no where els but the dragons...

OK Lizzi, I admire your passion and support for McGregor.
Hope everything your dreaming about comes true for McGregor and our beloved Saints.
There will be no happier supporter than me to be proven wrong.

JD then Kevin Walters would have been my preferred options.

OK let's talk accountability.
We have Knights, Souths, Titans, Broncos, Panthers, Dogs yet to play.
IF Mary is the coach you believe he is and the team is doing as well as you think it is how many of these games should we actually win?
5 of these team are below us on the ladder and theoretically in your world have inferior coaches so should we win at least 5 of them?
Lot's of people jumping up and down with joy over the Manly game (I am happy enough for the win but am wise enough to know the 20 minute lapses are a killer) so does that mean we might win all 6 games?
If we were to lose half of these games would you be happy or would you think we underachieved?
All well and good to pick the bones out of everything to make things look good but we are now at the pointy end of the season and all results will matter so should Mary be allowed any latitude for any losses?
