Interesting article in the SMH yesterday about the surging Roosters, and their so-called 'coach whisperer', Particularly this bit:

'Words like “hope”, “want” and “maybe” are banned.'

Quotes from Dragons players today in this Herald article

https://www.smh.com.au/sport/nrl/dr...ink-they-re-still-on-top-20180731-p4zuoi.html

"The result went against us on the weekend [against the Roosters]. But are we looking at it thinking we've got no hope? Absolutely not."
"We want to improve but we don't need to stress"
"Just like earlier this year when we weren't getting carried away with ourselves, and maybe people externally were, we know it's not as bad as what those same people are saying now.''
Great post
No one believes that they can turn it around least of all the players.
The posters that reckon it's all about the players take note.
McGregor and any coach has a pivotal role to play in winning silverware.
Our mob like McGregor but just don't believe in him any more.
That is why you are getting limp performances on the field.
It's called resignation...

What happened to the ex army guy who was doing the motivation work with the team!
Guess Mary pissed him off as he looked like a threat!
Some as that North Queensland attacking assistant.

So true, our coach and players have perfected the art of maybe, possibly, still trying, hopefully, with any luck, might, you never know, give it a shot......all things mediocre.

Needs a clean out.

Maybe they’ve hired Yoda? “Do, or do not. There is no try”
It makes for nice buzzwords this stuff but there’s plenty of other ways to build self belief. I don’t believe Graham has ever relied on hoping and wanting - he works his arse off - and whether he uses the wrong words is pretty irrelevant.
Did not expect anything more from you but this BS of making excuses for players.

Of course the words they use show exactly what zombie posted, our players are coached to think excuses, think maybes and simply hope for the best.

You would make a great assistant for Mary, long live mediocrity huh!

It’s round 21 and your ideas have been clearly proven wrong.

Dude in context there is nothing wrong with the use of want, hope, maybe in that passage.
Its not like they have said we hope we can bounce back, maybe we can improve and we want to win.
Then you may have a point.
Yes there is, it’s all wrong.
He says “Are we looking at it thinking we have no hope”

Mentally prepared players do not use the word hope.
Hope is not a plan, hope is not a strategy, hope does not mean we will.

I hope to win the lottery, I hope I feel better tomorrow, I hope we win, I hope we can fix it.

We will win, I will be better tomorrow, we will fix it, I will win the lottery.

Hopefully you now understand.......ooops,.....I am sure you now understand.

Wow.. if you think using hope in that context above is wrong then you’re just looking for any excuse to bad mouth the team.

He isn’t saying ‘we are hoping’ or even saying anything about hope but it’s rather a (rhetorical) question almost, depending what he was asked from the reporter.

Where he uses the word ‘maybe’ he is talking about what fans and members of the public may have been thinking.. he can’t just say ‘this is what everyone else thought’ - then he would get blasted by people like you for pretending to know what we think.

In saying that I do it with my teams all the time at work to get rid of words like “try” or “hopefully” etc.. there is no ‘aiming’ for x goal, or is “we will achieve x goal”.

Hey you wanna apply Oprah logic go ahead. Go buy a copy of ‘the secret’, shell out for tony Robbins tix, you’re exactly the kind of gullible mark they thrive on. Then blame your own lack of positive energy when people don’t send you money in the mail you porridge-brained rube.
If you think banning Graham from using the word hope would make any difference to how hard he trains or plays then you are even dumber than I thought.

This is a quote from bennets press conference last night. Just imagine if that was our coach. Don’t get me wrong Bennett has clearly performed over a very long period of time and Mary isn’t in the same post code. But it does go to show the problems we have, happen across every side.

“I don’t really have any idea,” he said.

“I’m extremely disappointed. They had all the enthusiasm and energy. We were lacking in those areas.

“Our problem is we get two or three good weeks of football then throw one of these games in.

“I can’t tell you why it happens.“

You don’t have to imagine - I’ve already directly copied and pasted posts from 2010 that make EXACTLY the same complaints. I.e. his team always falls away at the end of the year, he has no plan b etc etc.

The crazy thing is that we are in exactly the same position we were this round 2010. Same number of wins. Just lost 3 from 4. Same complaints.

To be fair though - our defence was still solid back then.

It actually highlights the problem we have with McGregor.
Bennett is honest, transparent and rarely makes excuses.
McGregor deflects and rationalizes because he doesn't want to look bad.
You can bet your bottom dollar that Bennett will go back and work on getting his team up for the next game and you will see changes/tweaks and improvements in attitude and focus.
Our guy is not capable of that.

Excellent parallel.
But in 2010 we were coached by Bennett - he had the coaching smarts and experience to turn things around.
Our defence stinks right now and has done so for some weeks.
Not that we are doing things that differently but rather that opposition coaches have devised tactics and are successfully attacking our weaknesses.
As a result, our for and against has also gone to shit.

Would be a welcome change from "I'm not making excuses but <insert excuse that deflects blame from him>".

It would suck to hear that sort of thing, same way it sucked in 2011. BUT at least its an admission that there is a problem.

One of the things that makes Bennett such an outstanding coach over such a long period is his ability to shield his players (often by accepting blame on himself). Even in those comments above, he's not deflecting blame at all. It's one of the reason the players love him. Sure, he'll get to training and tear shreds off them and make them feel like wrath, but that stays in the confines of training.

Direct contrast to Mary. He will look for any and every excuse within minutes of a match finishing.

Mary is quick to offer excuses and has thrown many a player, conditioner and coach under the bus to deflect attention away from his own performance.

Imagine what Bennett would have done with our cattle.

Am pinning my hope on the senior players steering the ship come finals time.

Lord knows we can’t depend on Mary to make the tweaks necessary to right the ship.

Coach's preview: Round 21
St George Illawarra Dragons coach Paul McGregor give his thoughts ahead of our Round 21 clash with Warriors at WIN Stadium, Wollongong.

Did I hear correctly? Did Mary just say that they are not going for the Minor Premiership , just aiming for Top 4??? Surely I'm wrong................
Just listened to it myself....yep he said that he was only aiming for a top 4 spot .Unbelievable.

In all honesty, I don't think you could seperate Mary, Sticky & Dean Pay as equal cellar dwellers in the coaching ranks. All 3 were great players, but not quite so great with the clip board in coaching.
