I've said before, it's time players take ownership of behaviour.

If they see a mate having too much to drink in public, pull him into line - because, as you say, the game as a whole gets tarred with the same brush.

Cast your mind back to what happened earlier at the year at Manly.

I wonder how that would have panned out had a couple of players who werent drinking tapped Watmough and Stewart on the shoulder before things got out of hand......

why even say this just in the context of "football players"? .... society as a whole needs to sort their sh*t out - how many people out there are stopping their mate from doing dumb sh*t when they are drunk? not many - footy players are the same as everyone else and have the same peer pressures etc

who here hasn't been with a mate who, while being pissed as a fart, has decided to have a slash in a place which is NOT a toilet? ... its pretty f'n common - but if you happen to be footballers, you get plastered across all the papers for it and everyone cops the boofhead label from it

if my work colleague is pissed and screws some chick in a toilet at the pub, does the world find out about it and my profession gets labelled as womanising chockheads who disrespect women? - no, no one gives a sh*t cos no one ever heard about it

I agree with your point, but the bit in red maybe suggests that there's even more reason for them NOT to do it.

FFS, Willie did it outside a pub, where there were perfectly working toilets inside.
If these people want to be as dumb as dogsh*t, they'll get treated as such, because, as you say, there is an insatiable appetite for that kind of news, sadly.

ok - taking away the title of the thread (which i considered to be pretty tongue in cheek - obvs NOT the saddest thing i have ever heard)

Im not saying that these two had the strongest relationship - but you know what, there are ALOT of marriages out there that are shaky, and alot of them would pull through and make it work.
Due to this guy being a footballer, and his wife's friends obviously buying into to EVERYTHING that the press reports- this couple were not given the chance to work through their problems. And don't think it was the wife's fault, because i doubt there's a woman alive who wouldn't take the advice of her best friends. I don't blame her at all (in fact i wish more of my friends would listen to me about their deadsh*t boyfriends)

The actions of some are to blame for the media's license to print whatever they want at the moment, and i just thought it was SAD that here was an example of what this could do to people!

Also - they may be highly paid and slighty celebrity, but players are still people..

For a start Strider, if we were in one of those industries (say acting, singing, entertainment, royal family etc) chances are we would be among the most highly paid individuals in the country and living privileged lifestyles.

so what? ... I think people have a bit of a chip on their shoulder over the amount footballers get paid .... why do we have to hold sh*t against them cos they are good at something at earns alot of money

Some of them are pissing in public; having sex in public; being convicted in Courts which are open to public; one this year has got a jail sentence; one was shot at in the Cross; several have been charged by police for altercations at or outside hotels ...

I think thats the point ... "some" are dickheads - surprise, surprise, they are f'n footballers! - many of whom probably never got a strong upbringing and were encouraged to do the right thing .... but others were - and they behave appropriately, yet they still get dumped in the stereotype of boofhead footballer who pisses in public, screws in the toilets at the pub, etc etc

The dude in this article seems to be implying he believes he did nothing wrong, but the fact others do affected his marriage .... maybe he's lying, maybe his wife was gulible, I don't know??? - but maybe he's right also?

i wonder how people would feel if the media stalked THEIR profession? (plumber, builder, nurse, doctor, etc etc) .... if your colleagues ended up in the papers constantly and people's opinion of you was affected by association

i think the point of this being sad/unfortunate is that the person in question got screwed over by things totally out of their control because others who happen to share the same job title are wankers

Been there done that. Seen lies written in papers and aired on radio unchallenged that directly threatened my employment. Sucked it up, dealt with it knowing that I made a decision to work in an enviornment that attracted media attention and rolled with the punches.

yeah - willie is a self absorbed dickhead - does he care if his actions are making other players look bad? probably not - is it fair others should cop flack from willie being a knob? no

footy players are young guys, wanting to do the things other young guys are doing .... yeah, alot aren't real quick between the ears at times

point is - its unfortunate everyone cops the stereotype because of the bad ones

Somebody's marriage breaking up is sad - period.
It would be really hard to sustain a relationship in an environment where women were throwing themselves at you. I can understand why a player's wife would feel insecure. Even if the player wasn't interested in fooling around the presence of these women would be bad for the relationship. I doubt that any of the guys on this forum would be happy if the roles were reversed. So yeah .. its pretty sad.

I read that article as well. Firstly the idea of a marriage breaking down as a result is really tragic, but from what that player believes, it was not so much because he was a rugby league player but because his wife's friends were stupid and his wife was even stupider. I also thought that if players themselves are feeling ashamed and embarassed to be rugby league players, than doesn't that mean that they are buying into a lot of the crap that is being said too. I mean if they don't want others thinking that way of them and perpetuating these stereotypes, shouldn't league players first not think that just because media etc are giving them a bad rep because of the actions of a few bad eggs and unfortunate incidents that that says anything about rugby league players as a whole and that being one should be anything to be ashamed of

By association? Plenty of people. The name of my office was mud and by association myself in a professional environment was mud for about 18 months

I've seen first hand how media operates when they smell blood. I've been at my old boss' house when a TV was camped at the foot of the driveway, no reporter, just a cameraman waiting to get a shot of a car leaving a driveway in a hurry. I've been in an office where a person was doing an interview with a certain shock jock who, at their end turned the volume down and then talked over the the top 'answer the question, dont you have an answer'. I've had to make all my emails and phone records available for investigators because of lies written in newspapers and aired on talkback, so yeah Strides, when you ask the question that you did I have a better idea than most on here.

Thing is though, I made a decision to work in that environment and accepted it as part of the job and had no option other than to roll with the punches. Footy players likewise need to accept their chosen profession attracts media attention.
