National Rugby League | September 18 2019 3:49PM

THE National Rugby League has today advised South Sydney Rabbitohs player Sam Burgess that he must show cause why he should not be issued with a breach notice over public comments made about the judiciary process.

All players are bound by the NRL Code of Conduct which prohibits a player from commenting adversely on the NRL Judiciary.

Mr Burgess has agreed to meet NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg to explain his comments and why he should not be issued with a breach notice.

Mr Greenberg said the NRL Judiciary was an independent body chaired by a distinguished Supreme Court Judge.

"On face value, Sam's comments about the judiciary breach our Code of Conduct and are offensive to both the Chairman and members of the panel who carry out their duties impartially, without fear or favour,'' he said.

"We take a pragmatic view about most of the debate that occurs around the game. However, the NRL Judiciary is a longstanding and independent process based on the principles of natural justice in our court system.

"Our Chair is an esteemed Judge of the highest calibre and our panel members are former high-profile players who are independent from clubs. The integrity of the system and the people in it should never be questioned."

Mr Greenberg said all players have the opportunity to discuss issues about the game privately with the NRL at any point.

"I've spoken to Sam today and invited him to meet face to face to discuss the issues he has and explain his comments."

The Rugby League Players Association have been notified of the action and invited to attend the meeting. A decision about whether a breach notice will be issued will be determined after the meeting.

The fact that Sam was obviously referring to the entire match review process needing an overhaul when he said the "judiciary system" being a "kangaroo court", and not the judiciary itself, seems to be have been completely lost on the NRL.

Talk about making a mountain out of a mole hill.

I'd be happy if Sam/Souths told the NRL where to go.

Why shouldn't their integrity EVER be questioned? No one is above reproach...

I thought........

1) NRL media raised many questions on the judiciary process already
2) the inconsistencies of MRC is clear to be seen, Sam just stated the obvious
3) James Graham talked about "blowing up" the process
4) Roosters coach talked about "trial by media"

I know
Sam was charged with Grade 2 elbow to throat of defender last year and missed two games.two weeks ago rooster captain did the same to Adam Reynolds, no penalty , no MRC issue and Adam Reynolds was forced off the field.

Why is Sam the only one on trial again here?

It's like i've always said, if you have an integrity unit, the day will come when eventually you'll need an integrity unit for the integrity unit.

" based on the principles of natural justice " made me smile!

Sam should get a really good QC to highlight all of the inconsistencies and down right farcical decisions the judiciary has made over the last couple of years and ask Todd if this would match the descriptions he put forward. We have created an incredibly complex legal system for the game where club lawyers are fighting pathetic cases with pathetic reasons and winning. It is all a bit of a joke. Personally Id throw out suspensions for all but the most serious of cases and bring in a sliding fine system for most offences. gives NRL more money, hits players where it hurts and we dont lose the talent that people are paying to watch in games.

Burgess is a dope.

If he played with any integrity he never would've pulled that players hair.

And if he had half a brain he'd know that Kangaroo Court is a defamatory statement and that he is completely wrong.

The judiciary has been bloody woeful at times this year, but they were spot on with their penalty on him.

He should cop another 3 weeks for this comment so that he misses the Grand Final.

Just for the lols.
