Sam Tomkins: coming to an NRL club near you

Mate, any team that finishes 13th and then buys SBW, James Maloney and Michael Jennings is going to improve.

Plus the roosters have had a very young but big and talented forward pack for 2 years or so now.. They are just starting to hit their straps.

Also they got rid of Anasta.

James Maloney has always been a wonderful player, his form at the roosters is no different to what his form has been at the warriors. This is not the first season he has been talked about for NSW.

I also have no doubt in my mind that dureau would struggle if he came back to the NRL

You are wrong about James Maloney not improving under Trent Robinson.

Read this from today's paper:

Guy is insanely quick, fantastic step and knows how to get past defenders. He will light up the NRL like Barba has

This is the real reason for the chooks success and Tigers demise. (forget the injuries ;-))

It won't prove the point again because Luke Walsh is already a star in the NRL. Watch last weekend's Penrith vs Parramatta match and you will find out.

Albert.... Luke Walsh plays one game a year like that, and has the same kick to the corner attack every game. Not to mention they were playing the hopeless rabble that is Parramatta. He's average at best, and if you call that a star then that says enough.

Have you heard of the notion of playing in a lesser competition?

Michael Dobson and Scott Dureau are quality ESL footballers. They arent an NRL halves arsehole

SLE (Super League Europe) not ESL (English Super League) is a lesser competition because its bottom 4 teams are below NRL standard, and its middle 5 teams are at roughly current Parramatta standard.

However its top 5 teams (currently Wigan, Huddersfield, Leeds, Warrington and Catalans) are equal to most NRL clubs, as they have proved over the years by beating NRL teams in the World Club Championship more often than they were beaten by them.

Melbourne took the last WCC very seriously but only beat Leeds by one try.

Sam Tomkins, like Scott Dureau, stars in a top 5 SLE team.

Parra have the worst forwards in the comp and lost their only good one during the game. Penriths forwards totally dominated and made even a nuffy like Walsh look good.

I can just imagine how much whinging there will be on here about him If he comes over, will make the threads on matai and slater look mild!

He's a great player and would be a star.

When (imo) he was in the poorest form he's had so far in his career (2011 from the second half of the Challenge cup final onwards), his efforts vs Australia:

1.40 and 4.15 is him setting up a nice couple of tries (think he did similar in his debut year vs Australia). But like I said, overall he was in poor form at the time. The other times he's played Australia were in his debut season and at 7 when he'd just played fullback for pretty much the whole year (he's never been put at 7 at club level, our national coaches have a nasty habit of being morons).

The guy is way, way too good for SL. Burgess/Graham etc weren't as far ahead of his peers as Tomkins is over here.

I'd rather he hit the NRL than Union, but I'll be sad to see him go.

Let's just remember that the WCC is played in England and the Australian side usually has their first hit out so they are extremely patchy and lack match fitness.

Not proof of the talent and quality of competition between NRL and ESL.

Tomkins could be good but he isn't 1 million good until he makes his mark here.

He is great but agree not worth 1mill, that would put him up with the best paid players in the comp and I wouldn't rate him that high. I guess you are worth whatever someone is willing to pay.

Re ESL., what makes you think the comps would be comparable? If they were the NRL would be doing something terribly wrong given the difference in money in the game and the amount of jnr players in each country.

Put it this way. From everything I've seen, I'll be disappointed if he doesn't end up coming to the Warriors. I'd much rather have him than see him at another club.

Depends on what your salary cap break up is. I believe the salary cap goes to $6.3m next year. The $1m could also be taken up by 3rd party endorsements.

Also, for the Warriors, the Warriors for years have been playing miles under the salary cap because they simply can't attract top line NRL talent. Aside from Price, Wiki and Tate, in the last 8-9 years the rest have been players with a point to prove (Inu, Mateo), fringe first graders (Seymour, Maloney) etc. Its well accepted the Warriors are miles underneath. So if you look at from an opportunity cost perspective, they're probably not going to have to part with much talent if any to fit him in.

The 'he's a back' argument doesn't fly for me. Who was the last top line back the NRL's had from the ESL? The only English backs I can recall coming here in the last 15 years are Ian Sibbot (I think that was his name, and he wasn't a top liner, and I think he may have been more of a utility), Chris Thorman (I know he played two test matches but he's NOWHERE near the quality of Tomkins), Jordan Tansey who was average in the ESL, and Richie Mathers who was more of a solid player with a track record of injuries with good defence rather than a player with out and out scoring ability.

I doubt Tomkins will necessarily do what he's done in the ESL, but to discount him is a joke at best.

Not worth a million and I doubt anyone would pay it. Outstanding player who would be in top 5 fullbacks in the world easily though
