Not worth a million and I doubt anyone would pay it. Outstanding player who would be in top 5 fullbacks in the world easily though

This.

If he was playing in the NRL he'd probably be the 3rd best fullback in the game. Can't wait to see him here, i'd be stoked if we got him to replace Mini, but maybe not for a million.

Absolute clueless nuffies in this thread.

For me at the moment he is in the 2nd tier of fullbacks. Not yet as good as an Inglis or Slater but similar to Hayne, Barba etc. To suggest players like Mozllzen/Zillman are better than him is barney. I have never seen anyone dominate Super League like Tomkins has but like people say the NRL is a different story but I have no doubt if he does sign for an NRL club this time next year a lot of you will be looking at this thread looking stupid.

1st tier - Inglis/Slater
2nd tier- Hayne/Barba/Tomkins/Stewart

I wouldn't worry about it, people used to post similar shit about Burgess and Graham

It's only really now that several forwards are dominating in the NRL that they've created this idea that only English forwards are good enough for the NRL

Paying $1m to a bloke who has never played NRL and currently plays in a comp on par with Q Cup, maybe a little bit better.. Ridiculous. I'm even willing to bet he'll get injured within a few games of debuting in the NRL. Physically harder. Warriors also aren't going great, he'll end up doing more defence then attack. Lower your price, arms are open.

pfft when was the last time the QLD Cup premiers beat the NRL premiers? Maybe Castleford, Salford and London might be on that level but saying the whole comp is like that is incredibly idiotic. Maybe you think the QLD Cup rep team would beat New Zealand as well?

It's amazing how insular some posters are when it comes to English players or the ESL.

No player in the game is worth a million a year though.

Geez there's some wankers in this thread.

"The SLE is worse than a Sydney Under 6s league" "English backs suck" "He's overrated and couldnt compete against our genetically superior Aussies" "My nan would look good in the SLE"

Wankers. Arrogant, insular, narrow-minded geniuss of the highest order.

Sam Tomkins is one of the best players in the world. He's freakishly talented and would light up the NRL.

I don't think the $1 Million reported price tag is correct. He'd get $650,000 - $750,000 at most by anyone stupid enough to throw that at him.

If he is worth the reported $1 Million well than Inglis and Slater should be worth $2 Million because fair dinkum they'd run rings around Tomkin's reputation.

In saying that I'd like to see him test himself over here against the best week in week out. English players are always welcome to test themselves out here! They've done well so far! (Apart from Moore).

That's such a stupid misconception.

A players value is determined by what the market is willing to pay for him.

Theres multiple factors which determine this
- what other off contract players are available in the market
- how much interest from other clubs and codes is there
- the desperation of the teams bidding for the player.

Sam Tomkins hits the mark and all those factors so he will benefit from it. Especially the desperation of the warriors. They are struggling to attract anyone to Auckland so have no choice but to offer more money than other clubs.

Someone show Tomkins this thread, that will motivate him to cut his price, come to the NRL and shut a bunch of nuffie morons up!

This guy is easily 3rd best fullback behind Slater and Inglis and would walk into any NRL side except Storm/Souths. Can't wait for him to play here and leave all these clowns with their jaw on the floor.

We have to get him here, simple as that. If it means some club has to pay a bit extra for him then so be it.

If Tomkins is lost to union then that would be a real shame. For English Rugby League it gives supporters a true star around which they can market the game, and if he makes it in Aus it will only enhance his reputation further.

As to the debate about his abilities, there's no question he would be extremely good in the NRL. From my limited viewings he has the pace and skill to match it with the best fullbacks. I would love to have him at North Queensland.

Yep. Every second game in the ESL is a gimme. He hasn't proven himself at all IMO.
Oh, and he would get dominated against NRL kick chase and set lines. Good touch player in open space, but little more.

Sam Tomkins was born in my home town and there is no bigger fan of his than me and I really believe he'd a genuine success in the NRL

However the price tag requested for his services is simply silly

No player can take up that much salary cap on their own without being tested

Paying him close to a million means you rate him alongside Cam Smith who is the games most influential player. That's just daft.

I'd be offering him $500,000 for two years with options to extend / increase to closer to $750,000 if he proves himself. Anyone willing to pay close to $750k straight up is just desperate.

Oh and re the comments from Chicken Hunter about Sam playing against Australia. I remember a game between England and Australia where Sam made Australian tacklers miss and he looked every bit at home in that game as Billy Slater did for the Australians. Having watched League internationals since the late 90's it was the first time I'd seen Australian defenders grasping at air when an English back had the ball. An Australian friend of mine made exactly the same comment the following day.

However, one game is not evidence enough for the money being asked for

Fair assesment at this stage. As I said, potentially the 3rd best fullback in the NRL.

There's a reason a lot of Aussies are hoping the poms cause a major upset in the RLWC...

Ryan Hall, who is another world class SLE back.

that guys a monster. would love to see him play down here.

as for tomkins 1mill - no, but he is a very good player and i think would quickly establish himself as one of the top fullbacks in the NRL. he's got a certain amount of unpredictability about him which we need to re-introduce into the Australian game

that backs vs forwards argument is geniused. Brian Carney was the best winger in the world and its a shame he went back after 1 season. we havent had enough decent english backs come down here for them to make an impression overall. it'd be like us sending minto over there and having the poms say our backs cant make their standard

Signed a 5 year deal in 2011 and has a clause in his contract that he cant speak to another team until 2015. Worrying trend of players breaking contract for the NRL, but the Wigan chairman seems happy to let him go.

Great player - complete tit, so I agree with other posts about his temperament. Will need to improve. As for arguments he's not good enough for the NRL - he isn't but Mike Cooper and Scott Moore are?

There are a lot of players playing in the nrl every week which aren't good enough for the nrl. Tomkins might join their ranks, or he might join the ranks of the just good enough I supposes, you know like boyd and gordon. Don't see him cracking the good player ranks, not at fb.
