Same sh*t, different year

After i was asked to leave the slipp inn last night with 10 minutes to go in the game for 'excessive swearing' i cast my mind back to round 5 last year when i was asked to leave the crest at sylvania for throwing my empty glass against the wall.

Following this footy team is the most frustrating thing in the world. However the worst thing is we all know nothing is going to change unless a full scale clean out is on the cards. They were a c*ck tease last week and lead us to believe that maybe sh*t had changed, but last night proved that we're in for another 9-14th finish.

Sure we'll win a few games, we'll score some flashy tries and visit a sh*tload of hospitals. Half way through the year we'll beat some team minus their origin stars then penrith or souths the following week to give us some more hope. The reality will strike again and we'll surrender as soon as someone gets a repeat set of six. Late in the game Benji will score a length of the field try to make it 48-12 and Vossy will remind everyone that we're 'the entertainers.'

To give us any sort of hope the following should be non negotiable in going:

Sheens & Simmons - What more needs to be said? Five out of the six years they've been in charge we have heard the same empty threats after a loss 'there will be some players back in nsw cup next week', 'the u/20s had a good win today so youll be seeing a few of them next week' , 'my experienced players let me down, a few will be getting a tap on the shoulder' blah blah blah etc etc.

We all know its crap and so do the players. Rest assurd next week we'll see some changes. Ryan will be in the 2 and Tuiaki will be in the 5. Ellis will be in the 12 and Heighno will wear the 11.

The players know they can play like sh*t and nothing will happen. They have no fear of consequence what so ever.

Our defence is nothing short of a joke. They have had six years to get this right and is just getting WORSE every year. Next time a team gets in our 20 they should just give us the ball, throw 6 points on the scoreboard and get in place for the kick off. I have never seen a tryline easier to breach then ours. We would allow the most one off the ruck tries in the whole comp by some margain. It has gotten beyond embarrassing, we just expect it now.

Also what the hell was the go with our bench?? Sheens went back to his dream of no props on the bench. Instead we have two utilities, a former center and a small sh*t backrower.

John Morris - Wow he tries, he's a top bloke, he visits the kiddies burns unit twice a week. The reatrd can't even feed a f*cking scrum properly!!!!!!!!!! For over 2 years now we have had the put up with this robot completely ruining our attack week in and week out. I don't blame Morris at all, I'm sure he evens knows he isn't a halves as*hole. Once again its the super coach who refuses to acknowledge his MASSIVE f*ck up by signing Morris to replace Scott Prince.

Dene Halatau - If the last time i did something good at work was in September 2005 I would have been on the street a long long time ago. The last time I remember Halatau doing anything remotely productive for us on the footy field was in the Dragons semi final. He has lived off that game ever since. Halatau would have to be the most one dimensional player in the history of the NRL. The only variety he has in his game is whether he drops it or gets it and runs straight. We could have a 7 man overlap and he'd still tuck it under the arm. Then when we are defending he is equally terrible.

Tim Moltzen at fullback - I think Moltzen would go reasonably well in the halves or at center. However his positioning cost us the game against Penrith last year and again last night he was atrousius. He also NEVER backs up. Last night on multiple occassions Ellis, Heighno and Payten were looking for someone to offload to. If Gallant was playing he seriously would have scored 3 tries. Once again this isn't his fault, its the f*cktard who picks him there.

Corey Payne - Again i don't really blame him. Payne tries his heart out however is used as a battering ram. He is simply too small and too sh*t to be effective as this.

Bryce Gibbs - Chris Paterson Mark II, except with more penalties. Like Halatau has been living off 2005 for far too long. This bloke wouldnt scare Roy Bell with his hit ups. Is also good for a few stupid penalties and a dropped ball right when you least want it. Yes we all know he hasnt been the same since the O'mealy hit. Wah wah, that was over 3 years ago. Footballers only play for 10-12 years. So effectively a quarter of his career has passed since that incident. No excuses anymore. Aim up or f*ck off.

I could go on and on but its late and its all been said before. Unfortunately I think we just have to accept that nothing is going to change and the club is happy with mediocrity. I just wish I could be happy with that as it would make my weekends a lot less frustrating.

Tigernick. I was at Balmain Leagues Club. There were no thrown glasses or excessive swearing. A few mumbled choice words and plenty of shakes of the head. However probably an overall acceptance of the where the team is heading in season 2009.

Usually at the start of each season I am cautiously optimistic. However I genuinely expect us to finish in the Bottom 5 or 6. We have been on a slow but gradual downward spirial since 05 and that trend will more then likely continue. People who think a major revivial or miricial turnaround is about to happen, are blinded by hope, not rational thinking or reason.

In previous season I have been filthy after losses. However this season my attitude is to realistic. Almost a defeatist attitude. Its largely the same inconsistent, underacheiving players that failed in 2007 and 2008. The same head coach with the same selections, interchange tactics. The same Defensive coach. The same deficiencies in recruitment and retention. The same home ground situation. Why will 2009 be any different when by in large the joint is exactly the same? The Cows and Dogs have acted swiftly and will have better seasons then us.

Unfortunetly it will probably only take the club to hit rock bottom for anything significent to happen. We all want us to do well and I would be the first to stand up and admit it if Sheens and the team had a great season. However all the reasons we failed in 07 and 08 have been evident in just 2 Rounds in 2009.

Over the past 18 months the place should of shaken up. However nothing has changed. Mediocrity has been accepted and a lack of accountability exists. The rot has set in on the field and they are very luck to still have a strong fan base following the team all over Sydney. However that won't last forever. My fear long before this week was season 2009 was always going to a bit of a write off., and this may be the first season where crowd numbers really start to tail off.

You might be right. In fact you probably are.

Having said that, I'm going to reserve judgment for a couple of weeks. I'm hopeful that last night was an aberration. We looked extremely tired from the get go coming off a four day turnaround and the humidity only made it worse. We were lucky to only be down by 10 at half time given the amount of ball we gave up. I'm not saying this to excuse the performance; a professional team should be be able to play after a four day turnaround and in unexpected heat. I don't think it's wise to assume that last night will be an accurate reflection of our performance this year.

Also, a bit rough on Halatau. Thought he was one of our better players last night.

'same sh*t, different year'

What, you mean the dribble that comes out of your mouth.

The reason why we played so poorly was the amount of mistakes we made, which you didn't mention once.

You seem like a very angry man which I think can blind your judgement

Our side is probably the best looking one over this 5 year span.
We just played the worst we possibly could Saturday night.
The amount of errors we made, merged with the climate and turn around really didn't help at all. Not to mention the Cowboys having a really good game when they were pumped and ready for their first win of the season in front of their home crowd.
All the factors were against us and in typical fashion, we lost when the going got tough.

I still think we can bounce back Friday night vs the Chooks.

The one big problem besides Sheens and Simmons is Benji. Benji is playing like a total joke, he is attention hungry and his ego is so inflated. He wants everything to be about him, Marshall Magic, Benji Brilliance etc. If he played like a normal player and only used some of his extraordinary antics when need be, we'd be in a much better situation.

As an outsider looking in, I think this post perfectly illustrates the Tigers.. Apart from the part about following the Tigers being the most frustrating thing in the world. Trying being a Dragon..

"Our side the best looking in 5 years" Just look at he key postions

1----moltzen--inexperienced and not a no1
6----Morris not a 6 or 7 maybe a 14 at best
7----Benji work in progress at best
9--- Farah class but still a long way to go to get back to where he was

You cant win matches with the above 1 6 7 and 9 and we dont have much in the cupboard to fix the problem.
Sit back and brace yourself the spoon is on its way

I think the worst I've got in public was at Doyalson RSL with a slammed glass on the table and an expletive so loud they heard it in Toukley (the game where the Cowboys ran us down in Townsville in 2006), but yeah it does get frustrating, your hopes are high and they crush you every time. We must all be mascochists deep down.

Like Eddie, I expected a bottom 5 finish this year and in fact tipped us for the spoon. As you say Nicko, nothing has changed from last year to this year so I can't understand anybody that, looking objectively, honestly expected us to make a serious run this year. I'll be stoked if we do, but at the minute I'm taking wins and losses with about the same amount of indifference.

And this sure as sh*t ain't our best side over the past 5 years. We've got TWO props, ZERO halfbacks and continue playing either under-performing players or players out of position.

As for the whole Marshall wants everything to be about himself, what on earth are you basing that on Pro?

Tiger Hawk- I agree bottom end finish for the WT's but I do not accept that WT management should accept that as acceptable- they have accepted mediocrity and underperformace for years and let spin and Mr Nice Guy image override performance on the field where it counts. They should tell Sheens, Simmons and McDonnell nothing less than top 8 is acceptable, if not, resignation time boys.

How much do the long suffering fans have to take with no management accountability?

Not disagreeing with that, personally I've just simply accepted the situation and will not get upset if we lose by 1 or 50 any or every game this year.

I called for Sheens' head before the end of 2006. All my mates called me crazy and trotted out the same line "when do the players accept responsibility". So I suggested we get rid of guys like Fulton, Gibbs, Halatau, Harrison. Suddenly the excuse is "who do you replace them with". All the apologists are the same, just make excuses and accept things. I've accepted our fate for this year because there's simply nothing you can do about it now the season has started, but I've far from accepted that we should be in the same position in 12 months time.

He craves the attention.

He tries all these fancy no look passes, he tries to pass the ball fifty meters, release it out of his hands in a different direction. He tries to be flashy, when being simply is flashy and effective. I swear, if he had that situation with the flick to Pat Richards now, he'd try to do a handstand, pirouette and throw it between his legs.
On top of it he tries to run and put steps on before catching the ball and just makes too many fundamental errors when being flashy.

Geez that's drawing a long bow. He certainly chances his hand but to say he craves the attention, in effect playing for his own image / hype / media, above winning is a big stretch.

If you want to see an example of a player who's read too much press on himself, Kidley is on MNF right now. He's actually been restrained so far tonight but it's only a matter of time.

I like Tigers fans...some of them....they are realists and dont have their heads up their arse. They see the big picture.
Good points Nick.
If you try tell that to Graeme Hughes or Gavin Robertson they will just shoot you down.
Especially Gavin "tim as won a comp ever 4 yrs" blah blah blah...but then thats what i come to expect from apologists like him.

Robertson's understanding of Rugby League is akin to my understanding of the workings of an atomic bomb. Non-existent.

We seem to be doing the same thing we've done for the past 3 seasons, but this time we haven't had the injuries so our "convenient to blame" story isn't there.

Agree with Nick.

Gallant is a gun. Should have easily been our first choice Fullback this season. As has already been said, if there's anyone in the club who can sniff out an opportunity from an offload, it's Gallant. Moltzen isn't a fullback, he is either a half or a centre. Why are we finding out if he's a fullback in First Grade FFS? We have one already.

Gallant to Fullback immediately. A must.

Morris is a goer but has no talent. Has he ever played in the halves and had two try assists in one game? Bench hooker.

Tuiaki has a blinder in game one then looks scared in game 2. Halatau has bricks for hands and is as hard to read as a large print copy of Cat in the Hat. Benji looks like he needs to do something special every time he touches the ball.

Same crap, different year.

We let Harrison go and he hits 15 offloads in 2 games. Did he ever do that for us?

No.

Is it because he suddenly just became aware of this talent or was it because he wasn't given the opportunity to play that way at the Tigers?

I'd give Moltzen the arse, make him the 7 in PL and give him a week or two there to find his feet.... and if he does, piss Morris off to the bench and put Benji back to 5/8.

I'd haul Ryan and Tuiaki over the coals, make Tuiaki watch old tapes of John Hopoate and say "You had better become him quickly or you'll be playing PL". 20 hitups minimum per game or piss off. Ryan just had no gas left and was walking into the defence. If he can't play 80 minutes on the wing at 100%, get someone from PL who can.

Getting pissed off now... lol
