Will involve representative teams from China & India backed by the Chinese & played in a Beijing funded stadium with Paul Broughton involved. Good idea to get the Chinese investing in Pacific rugby league, if it goes well hopefully see more of it in the future...

I only know of Samoa, India and China as definites, nations like Vanuatu, Fiji, Tonga, Niue and Cook Islands have all been named... Not surprisingly they are all signed up to the China one-belt scheme.

Anyway I'll know more in the next week or so, so will communicate what I can then.

The NRL are the governing body of more than just the premiership. Many Rep teams including the Combined Affiliated States is picked by the NRL.

Official tournament launch is February 11 in Apia, with a launch in Homebush also scheduled that month.

Team numbers have changed to 12 Men's and 8 Women's.

Australia, New Zealand, China, India, USA and Samoa confirmed so far.

Rugby league takes its first tentative steps to become an Olympic sport with the launch of the first true World Nines in Samoa next week.

While there have been international nines tournaments in the past, this one has a difference - it will include the world's three most populous countries - China, India and the USA.

The tournament is the brainchild of former Newtown and Balmain coach Paul Broughton - a man in his 80s but still with a deep passion for the game.

He has enlisted the Prime Minister of Samoa, the Honorable Prime Minister Tuilepa Dr Sa'ilele Malielegaoi, as a supporter and he will launch the tournament, to be held in October, will have 12 Nations in the Men's Division and eight in the Women's.


Broughton sees the tournament as the first step towards admission for rugby league nines to the 2032 Olympic Games.

"To be considered for the Olympics, a sport must have a structure of at least 75 nations from four continents for men and 40 nations from three continents for women," Broughton said.

"We believe this tournament will be a success and draw many more countries to league in coming years."

The one of interest is China..
India have been playing internationals in Aus and NZ for a while and the US are a former world cup team with a reasonably stable league.

Paul Broughton has been working with the University system in China for a while now, so I imagine that the Chinese team players will be selected from a handful of Universities in Shenzhen.
