Sandow needs desire to reach potential: Lang

A guy like Sandow needs a big pack putting the defense on the back foot to look good
Our forwards don't run in 2's & 3's to put the defense in 2 minds and they certainly don't hurt in defense or tire the opposition
A guy 5 foot tall can only do so much

We still rely on Hayne because he is the best we have and potentially the top 5 players in the game. Why wouldn't you rely on him?
He has size, strength and skill

I agree I think if we fix our forwards then Sandow will provide the attack. The forward pack is as weak as 1 dip of a tea bag. They aren't intimidating or menacing whatsoever. Below are some of my observations of other packs;
Manly > Upset Hulk
Melbourne > Hard done by gladiator
Tigers > Angry Anderson
Sharks > B.A Baracus
Dogs > Rabid bull terrier
Parramatta > Mothers day card

This
it's all to do with our structures. Can't believe I'm using that word...Kearney's game plan as mentioned by some learned member last week is Storm 2008 and the game has moved on.
Yes Chrissy's defence has been ordinary, at best, but it's because opposition teams are mobile in Attack, hitting our halves and our line speed is atrocious. the worst in the NRL by a long way.

That's why I wonder why we don't do that... It's not a talent of talent it's simply a lack of execution. If the forwards run in numbers the defence don't know who's going to get the ball... whether it's the two running together on the inside or the decoy on the outside. If the forwards did the simple thing like run in numbers instead of these one out hitups all the time we'd be able to get on the front foot. At the moment when one forward does a hitup the rest are just standing their flat footed so the defence only have to go after ball carrier and you're going to tire them doing that. Melbourne have a pretty weak pack on paper but their forwards run in numbers all the time tiring defences out which enables Smith, Slater and Cronk to do their stuff.

This is true and Sandow is being isolated but he is doing what he was brought for. The souths game was probably close to his worst game he has played for us because the Rabbits defence was too good.

Sandow has kicked very well this year, highest percentage kicker to find grass (or something like that). His short kicking game hasn't been too bad but our edge forwards in particular have nothing about them and there is a reason we were targeting T-rex and Smith. Our pack is very one dimensional at the present time. Also Kearney is not playing to their best style, he needs Sandow and Roberts running the edge attack early but kearney continues pushing them to go back up the guts for some reason

Absolute Classic!!

But I agree with much of the discussion above. Our tactics seem badly outdated and we are going up the middle too much. We were great making ground down the edges against the Tigers and Canberra, that seems to have been forgotten by SK.

I'd reserve judgment on Sandow until we see what he's like when the team is better prepared for games and more switched on. I saw the 2000 Parra vs Penrith game on Foxtel. The difference in attitude from the 2000 Eels to the 2012 Eels is staggering. You could see the determination on the faces of the 2000 team.

The game hasn't changed that much & if comparing to storm they STILL play like that & because they can trust that everyone is doing their job they have perfected the play around it. This is what SK is trying to instil in this team from last year to now but some are resisting...there's been occasions when it's happened but generally the experienced forwards can't execute it as they are near the end of their playing career and have lost the ability to threaten the line for sustained periods (comes with age for most) and the new ones need this year & another pre-seaon to gain experience at it. Defense has improved and that's the first step, followed by forwards to bend the line & give go forward as a platform for the backs to work the magic. If you rely on flair and 50/50 exciting plays & can't grind out a win there's not a lot to create opportunities for players like sandow (& even hayne to a degree)

Last year Souths had a horendous injury toll, particularly in the forwards

Sam Burgess only played 4 games all year, Ben Lowe 2, Luke Stuart 5, Asotasi 8. Plus Crocker and Pettyborne missed a lot of games. Souths conceeded heaps of points, one of the worst in the comp. They were never gonna make the comp with all their main forwards out for a long time. HOWEVER Sandows individual brilliance shown through like nothing else, He created something out of nothing, or took opportunities as they presented themselves, this year he is doing neither.
