id imagine most clubs not fielding teams anywhere near full strength
to get 30K both days
to essentially watch a QLD & NSW cup tournament is pretty ok id of thought

this is where clubs like Penrith need a massive uppercut.

I reckon rotate it every year, as long as the stadium can fit in at least say 25k we could move it around the country and NZ as well. Sydney, Newcastle, Canberra, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Auckland, Wellington. Should keep it fresh

The 9s organisers are preparing a statement about how the graphic designer for their logo actually flew via Brisbane for the job, and so they are now feeling homesick and want to go home.

P.S. please ignore that dump truck of money from the QLD state government

Crowds in Auckland are well down this year, wonder why? Weather looks perfect.

Given the event is privately owned I would assume it will be up to the promoter to decide where the event will go and that decision will be about where he can make the most money.

guns n roses got 50k on day 1 of the 9s about 15 minutes away from eden park. plus cricket was on today and warriors dudding out

Think it might be a better atmosphere etc if played later and going until say 9pm but then I guess tv wouldn't be happy?

They need to hire the game day event organisers of bbl to give them some ideas of creating fan interaction and buzz during the game as well

On the field been brilliant. Watched every game and loved it. Youngsters showing their skills, one and two man tackles with no wrestling, refs making quick decisions, no tv replays, quick ball back in play. If only 13 a side was the same!

It's meant to be 38 degrees in Sydney today. Just a stupid time of year to be playing daytime football of any kind

They could play into the evening but it would still be high 20s/low 30s

Didn't stop the Sydney 7s today. RL fans are full of stupid excuses as to why things won't work.
They're professional athletes ffs, having a bit of a jog around for 10 minutes at a time in hot weather isn't going to phase them. Their pre-season is an annual 2 month hot weather torture session.

However... Sydney and Brisbane are the last 2 places this event should ever be played. If the main point of the Nines is a promotional tool for the game, then it should be played in places where RL isn't already the biggest show in town.

Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, Wellington, Christchurch.

That isn't its main aim. The main aim is to earn money for the promoter who owns the event.

It would be a shame to move it from nz, we do very little for the game there when you consider how important it is for the nrl. Moving it around nz cities so it is in Auckland every other year and Wellington, Dunedin, Christchurch alternating would be a good idea to stop fan fatigue which seems to be a problem for rugby league fans.

8 teams in Sydney, should be a no brainer to play it there at least once. Use Allianz though.

That isn't its main aim. The main aim is to earn money for the promoter who owns the event.

The main justification for the NRL to let a third party promoter profit from its players, then. If it doesn't benefit the NRL or the sport in some way then the event is pointless.
I believe the main benefit is the power of the short-form game to highlight the sport's entertainment value in a place where RL can use a boost.

I think the event can pull in just a big a crowd in Perth or Adelaide as in Sydney or Brisbane, and do far more for the sport, making it pointless to play in Sydney or Brisbane because it's throwing away a good opportunity.

On your other point, moving it around NZ would be a positive move, hopefully that's considered before giving up and taking it here.
