Special mention to Evil Dead the original 80s version.

Evil Dead 2 is where it's at. Even the directors realised that he had made a comedy horror, so really just remade the movie again and used that angle to exceptional effect.

I should add some horrors not in this list.

Hobo with a shotgun. - Bloody everything about 80s horrors that made them good, but done now.
Orphan - Has great pacing and twists.
Black Sheep - Comedy horror. But being a kiwi film I find the comedy much more to my liking. Well worth a watch.
Funny Games (US version) - A remake of a foriegn film. But I find it holds it's tempo well, slowly building up to a decent finale.
Fright Night (remake) - Colin Farrell and Toni Collette's acting chops really make this film work.
Green Room - Well made, great way to spend 90mins.
Misery - Can never be enough love for this film. Personally I think it's the best Stephen King film adaptation ever.
The Return of the Living Dead - More comedy than anything. Watched it again recently and it still holds up well.
Village of the damned (1960) - Seen this so many times. And it's still creepy as hell.
The Killing of a sacred deer - Once you have connected with one Yorgos Lanthimos film you will watch all his films. Though I will say they are out there.
Halloween (Rob Zombie version) - Really a combo of the first 2 original films. I find this a great remake of the series.
Anna and the Apocalypse - I like doing xmas movies. This is a great one for December.
1408 - Another stephen king one. Great movie. Works for the same reason misery works. Very few characters, and you can really put yourself in there shoes because of it.
The babadook - Great aussie horror. Watched it a couple times now. I want to buy the book in the film for the missus, but she would probably reel in horror and throw it at me (you can buy that book).
10 Cloverfield Lane - More thriller in my book. But so well made. You don't need to have seen any of the other cloverfield movies as they all stand alone.
A quiet place - Best horror in the last 10 years.
A monster calls - Not even a horror. But I feel it should be. Great movie.
Tucker and Dale vs Evil - You need to have plenty of comedy horrors, and this is one of the best.
House of a thousand Horrors + The devils rejects - Need to watch both. 2 movie is better, but the first provides better character development. Never watch the third in the series. It was fine with 2 movies (even the end of the second signifies a 3rd should have never been made).
