Btw, if you were implying that Manly fans are gimps, then you phrased it poorly.

The Police are an authority on all things criminal. Does that mean they're criminals?

I've been saying this for a while now. We're on the chopping block, whether or not we're the only team left in 'Northern Sydney'.

Considering it takes an hour to get from the Northern Beaches to Aussie Stadium on a good day (Spit/Military Road=Nightmare. It's like an hour from Balgowlah. I'd hate to think of the traveling time from the Forest of the Far Northern Beaches), we're as good as gone if something doesn't happen with the stadium.

Beyond the Stadium, the Beaches are in dire need of a rail line. But as the region is safe as houses for the Liberals, they won't bother investing in it and Labor wouldn't waste cash on it.

Don't manly have a Leagues club/s? Thought these places made millions each year, surely they could be funding stadium upgrades?

The kind of people that have moved into the North Shore don't go to Leagues Clubs. Harbord Diggers (An RSL club, admittedly),. that was once on of the biggest in Sydneys, got bought out by Mounties a few months back because they were skint.

When ever i see clubs like Manly planning for 15,000 I cringe, is that really there target attendances?

Not sure of the answer for these outdates suburban grounds but sounds like alot of them are reaching the end of their natural lifes. I hope clubs can find the funding to redevelop them like the SL clubs have done in the UK.

15,000? We got in excess of that as an average last year...We're looking at 17-20k if we have a good few seasons in an archaic suburban hole. If the Northern Beaches had decent infrastructure and Brookvale was upgraded into a modern stadia, We could average in excess of 20k.

But then again, If Norths had built a stadium on the Rail Line in the Hornsby Shire back in the 1980's, I have little doubts they'd be drawing over 20k punters a match today. It's a matter of taking your chances, but if they're not there, there's nothing you can do about it.

The stadium facilities available to clubs will become more and more a case of the haves and have-not's over the coming decade. Those clubs playing out of the more advanced venues will have a greater chance of drawing casual spectators and converting them to regular attendee's and will have a huge advantage in drawing corporate support where a premium can be made.

One of the best ways to ensure that the government keeps the grants to your clubs stadium flowing (besides being located in a marginal seat) is for the venue to accommodate as many tenants as possible. More games being played = more spectators = a higher return on the governments continual investment.

There is a clear correlation between the number of games hosted at a venue and the amount of government money spent on upkeep and upgrades.

Take the "Big 3" NRL grounds for example:

Suncorp Stadium: Broncos, Reds, QLD Roar, NRL Origin games, NRL Finals Series

Telstra Stadium: Rabbitohs, Tigers, Bulldogs, Swans, NRL Origin games, NRL Finals Series

Aussie Stadium: Roosters, Warratahs, Sydney FC, NRL Finals Series

Other NRL grounds that cater for more than one tenant:

Gold Coast Stadium, Robina (2008): Titans, East Coast Aces ARC Club, touted as the likely venue for a Gold Coast A-League Franchise

EAS: Newcastle Knights, Newcastle Jets FC

Paramatta Stadium: Eels, Western Sydney Rams ARC club, touted as the likely venue for a West Sydney A-League franchise (Sydney FC has committed to playing occasional games)

Canberra Stadium: Canberra Raiders, ACT Brumbies, likely venue for a Canberra A-League club.

Central Coast Stadium: Central Coast Mariners FC, Central Coast Rays ARC Club, 7 NRL games in '07

NRL grounds that cater for the one club:

Dairy Farmers Stadium*
Brookvale
CUA Stadium Penrith
Oki Jubilee Stadium
Toyota Park, Cronulla
WIN Stadium*
Campbelltown Stadium
Leichhardt Oval

* Indicates a stadium that has been earmarked as a home ground for an A-League team.

One of the keys to the Storm getting a new stadium was Melbourne Victory FC and the Melbourne ARC club committing to be co-tenants, (hopefully) securing Melbourne's long term financial viability in the NRL.

While an A-League franchise for Manly is almost certainly implausable, perhaps if the Sydney Fleet ARC Club could be convinced to move from North Sydney Oval to Brookvale extra funds could be successfully sought due to an increase in use.

The key here is proper stadium planning. Don't keep dribbling money into three or four park grounds locked away in residential areas with poor access. If the government pooled such funding into building a single modern boutique stadium in the style of Parramatta / CC / Gold Coast stadiums as a base for all rectangular codes in the north-eastern suburbs then I have no doubt it'd see fairly high and sustainable levels of use. But it'd have to be built close to a rail line and trunk road access. Somewhere along the Chatswood to Hornsby corridor looks about as far east as you could push it with present transport infrastructure.

Why not do a repeat of 1999 - get the North Sydney Bears thrown into administration and get Norh Sydney Leagues to pump $12 million into the club? It worked like a charm last time Manly were broke. You could even get Gosford stadium again without a pretend joint venture.

norths were on the verge of bankruptcy - manly came in after the leagues club had exhausted its funds. kept norths in with a team for 2yrs longer than they would have.

plus norths didn't have a licence to play in the NRL.

So, the Bears had $12 million available from their own Norths Leagues Club - but you're saying that they were on the verge of bankruptcy. Hmmm.

Manly weren't broke, but decided to go into a JV, change thier name and relocate to Gosford? Hmmm. Why - because that's the sort of guys they are - not self-centred - they were trying to do Norths a favour.

No wonder Murdoch got league so easily - they believe anything no matter how dumb.

Toyota Park, Cronulla is the only privately owned ground.

The upgrade took some time to get past Council and the environmental people in the NSW government.

The Leagues club failed to back North Sydney when the club went into administration. The Football club wasn't on the 'verge' of going broke, they were well past being just broke. The Leagues Club and the Football Club had practically been at war with each other in 1999!

$12m? I can't recall them every contributing that kind of money when the JV was in operation, but I'd love a source. IIRC, NS Leagues club matched the Stricken Manly Leagues club dollar for dollar until the Manly Leagues club couldn't contribute any further. Then Norths Leagues stopped funding and began praying that Manly would fall over so they could get their hands on the license...

Relocate? News to me. It was a venue split...

The merger offer was the least predatory on the table for the administrator to choose from. Fitzy wanted a Blue & Gold 'Parramatta Bears' playing full time out Parramatta stadium. Newcastle offered a 'merger' on the condition that the clubs colours, name and home ground remained the same!

no, it means when it comes to criminals they would be the blokes to speak to, they are the most knowledgeable on the matter of crime. As they deal with it each day
Much like manly fans, being gimps is a battle they fight every day

law enforcement is one of many contexts the word "authority" can be used

pay particular attention to the latter stages of definition #1 and part one of definition #4

Indeed.

Anyways, Brookvale is a f**king hole, they'd need a 10mil upgrade, then another 20 mil to buy some fans with class and dignity, of which few were present on saturday night
says the guy who lives in mount druitt.

I can honestly say i'd much rather the state gvt spend $100-200 mill to build a brand new state of the art 35,000 stadium that multiple teams can play out of rather than several $20 mill upgrades or whatever.
