I'm with you JW. At first I thought it was stupid, now I just think its funny.

'Oh, those next four games will be easy. We're top four material!!'

Suddenly...

'Sack Bennett! We suck!'
What you just said made total sense.. If we are expecting to win the next 4 and we don't, questions have to be asked..

We should not have expected to win them.

We give ourselves these lofty expectations and then seem shocked when the team can't live up to them.

What should have our expectations been this year?

To do better than last year? Currently we're marginally ahead.

Our expectations for our recent games is mainly what I meant. I think Top 8 was a fair expectation pre-season.

This thread is the result of pinning any hope on our hopeless football team. You lot could've joined Waldorf and I months ago and just said "Boooooo! Ring Gids because Newcastle is in dire need of a first grade standard NRL team Boooooooo!" But oh no, we're top 4 material, how many premierships are we gonna win?, how many tries are Uate and Gagai gonna score? BLAH BLAH BLAH. And now our team has shown how crap they are and Ol' Fogey Bennett's solution is to wheel out another retiree from the retirement home. Well he's gonna need a truckload of viagra to get this pack of geriatrics to rise.

Low expectations means no disappointment. Capish?

Given the teams not named Souths involved in our last four games, we should have been expecting to win. If we weren't, then we clearly are an awful football side and nobody in this forum would be surprised now.

And our best performance in this losing run was against Souths. I have no doubt we will give Storm a tough game. We just cannot find that gear the top sides have. We pray Gower can pull out a freak play or two. If he does and we beat Melbourne I will happily believe we are still alive. A win over Storm at AAMI would be like a semi final win to this club right now.

The huge decision for Benny is Gower 7 or 9 this week. I would go the 9 because we cannot front foot it with our current dummy halves. However we may also need him at first receiver to keep Melbourne honest in defence.

We seem to make a habit of playing teams into form, the sharks were terrible and are now world beaters. The warriors were diabolical and have now won 3 in a row. Although we did beat the panthers, they have been playing excellent since they almost beat us. Expect the dragons to go on a roll now.

Last placed Warriors who have been playing fantastic, exciting football for the past few weeks.

As opposed to us losing to a side who has been playing awful footy on the back of us playing even more awful football.

Context.

We are probably no chance next week in Melbourne, so a defeat there means Bennett would have to get this side to win AT LEAST six out of their last ten to be any hope of sneaking into 8 th place and even then we probably wouldn't. Seven out of ten would almost guarantee a starting spot in the semis.

The Warriors played fantastic against us mate, they would have beaten almost any other side that day. How they had played the previous weeks means f**k all

Hows that for context.

Yeah I don't really buy that argument. I hate writing off losses because the other team played fantastically. It's still a loss. We still came off second best, who cares how well they played. We need results at this point in time, it's no good reaching the end of the season with a bunch of tough well fought... losses.

Unfortunately I think some of the negative nancies will be closer to the mark come the end of season than any opposing views. We are very, very average. The main hope I'm holding onto is that we have some key players out who will surely make a big difference. Hooker obviously can't be understated.

All true mate but its dumb to expect the season to be over just because we were beaten by a team who despite underperforming before, turned in a great performance against us.

If they can turn their form around after being much much worse than anything weve produced this year, our boys certainly can

My initial impression after the match was we were done... that we needed a win there. The frustrating thing is that we're competing for 80 minutes, we just can't seem to get it right with discipline and taking our opportunities at the moment.

There's still time to turn it around, but we would need to be red hot for a good portion of the rest of the season, we need to stop letting teams out of their end so cheaply and we need Waddell to go away. Seriously can't understate how much better we looked with young Clydesdale on the field. Suddenly we were moving quickly in attack, both in carting the ball up and in moving it around. Waddell is deceptively useless. We can't have another bloke give away 6 sets of 6 in 1 match like House did against the Dragons, either. That is just bullshit.

I'm not declaring 'season over' because of last night's result. It's just the latest in a series of embarrassing capitulations that were easier to overlook earlier in the year because we'd beaten a few other down-on-their-luck sides.

Um, everyone who is playing for the Knights against the Storm please step forward...

... not so fast Waddell.

Waddell is deceptively useless.

Probably the best description I've seen yet, at first you think "okay he's not good but he's not crap either..." but then you realise he is a huge part of why we're getting dominated when we have the ball.

No one was saying anything after the warriors loss because of the circumstances but lets face it we played abysmal and unimaginative football last night and it's not the first time we've done this at home lately.
The reality is we've got a tough run home and losing these games now could be the difference between making the 8 and not.
Besides that lets face it we can't win if the opposition turn up to play and turn it into abit of an arm wrestle, we still have to play storm twice, bulldogs and roosters, I know they won't roll over and die so we it'll be tough, besides that we've got to travel to Nth Qld, Brisbane, Penrith and cronulla, it's definitely not a given we'll make the 8, intact I think we'll be struggling to make it from here
