Leeds have said they won't entertain him. He's broken his contract and that's him done with the club. They hold his registration and that all seems above board.
so, he rocks up prepared to honour the contract. Who then beaches it if they don't play or pay him?

Well he's missed most of pre season so I think it's already a done deal.
If you didn't turn up to work for months do you think your boss is going to be in the wrong if he tells you to f**k off when you go back?

He's also missed most of the per-season here.

Has he been training full on? If we are so keen on him, have we given him a regime to follow? Has he been tested & monitored?

I know he's a good player & the experienced hooker we need to help us go back to back but the longer this drags on & the $ required just to secure him, it's getting to the "not worth it" stage.

Leeds are going to have to cut there losses at some point and accept a reduced amount. Principles aside, it is better for everyone to resolve Seg's situation.

And as a man in NZ for a year for work away from family, home sicknesses can be a beast.

He shouldn't have signed an extension if he was homesick.
I don't buy it. He was going to settle in England until a few teams in Australia showed interest.
Leeds should hold strong.

That's true, but if they have terminated the contract how are they entitled to demand a transfer fee? There wouldn't be anything to transfer. They're probably within their rights to stop paying him. But if he turns up ready to honour it and they refuse to pay him I would think holding a transfer fee over his head is tantamount to a restraint of trade.

He made it quite clear he had no intention of going back once he had other offers.

He broke the contract.

Leeds are perfectly within their rights to expect some form of compensation.

As I've mentioned his registration is considered an asset.
Here it's not such an issue as transfer fees are not common but they are at home.
If a club pays £2m as a transfer fee then the player just walks out there has to be a mechanism to stop him playing somewhere else.
He can't be registered for two teams at once in this sport. If he goes to play union Leeds won't get anything.
I'm sure Leeds are much more aware of the legal issues than us and as he hasn't signed anywhere else yet I think they have him by the balls.

Can't say I know anything about him.

Seems we are keeping our options open for hooker.

Whoever gets the gig will be under some pressure to perform.

He seems to have a good attitude, which is half the battle.

If they're looking at Hodges (another fringe first grader), then why buy Mortimer and Cherrington? Sleggy or nuffin for me. Would rather spend Hodges money on a back where we are thin.

We might be going from one hooker to having 4 or 5 options...

Just get Seg. He is a cut above and Flan will manage his wild side...

Does Seggy even have a wild side? Other than "that pic" what legal trouble has he really been in? Getting Seggy is the only chance we have of being serious contenders again. Brailey isn't ready YET and the rest wouldn't stand out in A-Grade.

Some of us in here might remember the story about trying to resign Thomas Of The Bishop after the 1973 season (our first ever GF) and was trumped by new rules that had a ceiling cap on sign ons (or something similiar) As Tommy was actually a Captain Coach he was on more mon then just a "player", but the new rules meant he was meant to take a pay cut. Which he wouldn't.

There was talk of "can't we find $500 on the dancefloor?" But narhhhh the Sharkies wouldn't bend the new rules and guess what. We subsequently lost our General as he was offered good money from Norths in the Brissie Comp.

Goodbye Sir Thomas, hello Noel Thorton.

Totally get why Leeds are holding out for a fee for his registration - it's a matter of principle.

However, his contract has been terminated (due to his breach) and they've publically said he'd never be welcome back. So that means, he's got no option to earn money from rugby league (unless someone else is willing to pay a huge fee for him) - I reckon if challenged legally, Leeds might find themselves foul of some restraint of trade law (particularly when he tried the old backflip only weeks after signing, and before pre-season had started/before they expected him back - therefore he'd not actually started working for them under the new contract).
Sure he'd caused them an issue in terms of wasting a few weeks where they could have been sourcing a replacement, but is that really worth the value they're claiming for his transfer fee?
I think they shot themselves in the foot by terminating the contract so early.

So apparently Jayden Hodges is waiting in the wings according to fox sports. He has already met with flanno.

Personally I'd have Jayden ahead of both Morts and Cherro.

No thanks. He is woeful.

On Leeds and Seggy, they haven't terminated him, its just poor wording.
He has been stood down for breaking the rules in his contract.

Leeds still have him registered to protect themselves.
Any team wants him and they will have to pay up.

They've terminated his contract of employment, but held onto his registration - a bit like when SBW walked out on the dogs, he couldn't return to RL until he either bought out his contract or until it would have expired.

On a separate note, there is an interesting case going on with Castleford RL and Sale Sharks Rugby Union. A Cas player (Denny Solomona - who was super league top try scorer in 2016) was under contact until end of 2018, Sale offered a £200k fee to Cas for him which was rejected by Cas, so Solomona has 'retired' from rugby league and Sale have given him an RU contract and are saying they're not obliged to pay a fee to a Rugby League club as he's retired from that sport (he's played a fair few games for Sale now). Cas quite rightly are taking a case to the Courts against the player for breach of contract and against his agent and the Sale club for 'inducing a breach of contract'. The outcome of this case could have huge ramifications on RL contracts and the ability to cross codes at will.

I buy it. Been living in Montreal the last year and am tragically fuggen homesick, was so down around September that I almost extended my contract just to have some certainty in my life...but changed my mind and am now flying back in April with no job or place to live! Homesickness and the associated crap can really cloud your judgement, I can see where Seg might have made those mistakes. Regardless, I'm sure he's happy just living in Australia again away from miserable poms.
