So Telegraph today reports transfer fee wouldn't count to our cap.

BUT

We would have to pay $407,000 to Leeds for the transfer fee plus $200,000 to the NRL's Welfare Fund.

Looks like everyone's got their hand out.
Don't think the 400k for the transfer is the problem but rather the fact that it would count to our cap which would cause issues. Surely Seggy would have to be on a moderate contract if we have to shell out 600k to make it happen. Hearing Todd Greenburg is also holding off on rubber-stamping the contract till we organise him a blowie too!

IT’S the messy contract dispute that could cost Cronulla the signature of James Segeyaro.

Segeyaro claims he doesn’t require a release from Leeds, because he technically doesn’t have a contract with the English club for 2017.

The hooker agreed to a two-deal extension with the Rhinos in September, but it’s understood these negotiations were not finalised.

Segeyaro’s management claim Leeds haven’t notified the RFL about Segeyaro’s uncompleted deal and are playing hard ball over parting ways.

“We will go through the appropriate channels to resolve the issue but we are totally confident that James is not contracted to Leeds in 2017,’’ Segeyaro’s agent Sam Ayoub said.

The Rhinos, however, insist the hooker has breached his contract and have slapped a $425,000 transfer fee on his head.

Leeds boss Gary Hetherington confirmed his club had engaged Australian-based lawyers to sue Segeyaro for refusing to return to England for the final two years of his deal.

The hooker’s management must now prove their position is correct to pave the way for Segeyaro to join Cronulla.

But with Leeds standing their ground, the contract dispute could be headed for the courts.

Cronulla have also inserted a clause in their contract for Segeyaro, stating they won’t register the deal if the hooker doesn’t receive a release.

The Sharks are refusing to pay the transfer fee to snare the No. 9’s signature, with the overall contract threatening to reach almost $1 million because clubs will need to offer the rake a deal at market value.

They would also be forced to pay a 50 per cent loading — $212,500 — on the transfer fee, although that would be exempt from the cap and is directed to the NRL’s welfare and education fund.

If Segeyaro can finalise his disagreement with Leeds, he is expected to be cleared to return to the NRL.

NRL officials have indicated they would register a contract for the former Penrith rake.

The NRL would also ensure Segeyaro is paid market value if he linked with the Sharks.

As I was told motnhs ago, Leeds b etter work out what 100% of nothing is, very quickly. They need to find a reasonable dolalr value, like $50k-$100k or a player trade, beforethey end up with 100% of Zero.

If the contract wasn't registered this is a pretty open and shut case - there is no contract. If they can still register it, we need to submit our paper work ASAP. Messy.

This could drag out to the deadline in June, though if he doesn't have a contract he could be signed after like Hayne however he would be pointless for us joining so late in the year.

If we are playing hardball with a contract (or lack-there-of), I hope that same attitude is maintained with Carney.

I believe we did register our paperwork, but NRL said he needs clearance from ESL, it wouldnt surprise me if all of Leeds, ESL & NRL have it wrong

If you believe what Sam Ayoub says, you probably believe in Santa Clause.
The NRL are playing hard ball for a reason.

It sounds a bit suspect back end of January and this shady agents just claims he hasn't got a contract. If that's so then he should be sacking his agent for incompetence.
If Leeds get nothing I don't think they will be concerned I get the feeling they're out to make a point not a profit.

Thing is they have made their point. It is better for all involved to resolve it and see Seg on a football field.

Not for the ESL teams it isn't. These players need to understand if they don't honour a contract their will be consequences. If he plays then all it means is the consequences are just getting f**ked around a bit in the offseason.

Not really a verbal contract is every bit as binding as a written one, it's just a f**kload harder to prove. The fact it's taken this long before Segyaro's people mentioned it is a bit suss.

You are right though, this thing could easily drag out for months which is bad for all three interested parties.

You can't play in the NRL or ESL on a verbal contract though. It needs to be submitted and approved by the either league. If he does not have an ESL approved contract, he can get down the shire and chuck on a jersey tomorrow.

For players like Cherrington/Mortimer/Nu Brown/Brailey the dragging out of Seggy gives them big chance to start whoever gets hooking role at WCC, if plays well inside running, and remember they have great pack to work with and Jimmy will take heaps of pressure of them, its not like having Robbo at half
