Seriously how bad is Finch?

Finch needs to find his confidence. A stint in the PL for about 3 games would do him the world of good. When I watched the replay on Fox Friday night, I found Gus Gould's comments very interesting. He basically bagged Finch's passing game, and didn't understand why he kept throwing inside balls in direct traffic. Finch's only option is a crappy 1 metre pass on the inside which alwways leads to nothing. It seems to me that he is lacking vision and creativity and does not know what with the ball in his hands.

I disagree with the idea he is playing out of position. The majority of his early footy with canberra was played at five eight. Hages said when he was signed that his early experience with Finch was as a five eight. He only became a regular half at the chooks and that was because they had Fittler, who pretty much called all the plays anyway. After Fittler left and the chooks started losing Ricky ended up shifting him to five eight, so obviously he thoght that was his best position.

Even in his soo game although he was wearing the number 7, in his first game he had Fittler next to him calling the shots. In the his most recent soo effort if you go back and have a look at it he was playing second receiver for most of it, anasta plays more first receiver than he did though this was probably because Finch came into the team so late.

Therefore i don't believe he is playing out of position I just think he is playing out of form. If Hages doesn't want to drop him I think the smarter move would be to switch him with Green and have him coming off the bench to cover hooker and five eight, should green start to struggle.

Finch has been playing as a second halfback anyway. Alot of the time, you have Finch standing on one side of the ruck with Smith on the other. I don't see much difference between the 6 & 7 these days, only that the 6 may have more involvement in defence and generally tries to organise the 3/4 line..

6 is traditionally more of a ballrunner. I was a 6 and a 7, the basic difference is that the 6 is looking to be a bit wider and set up plays for the outside men. Although, it really depends on the side because sometimes the roles can be quite different than the traditional roles.

3 weeks ago I Hindmarsh was having handling problems but tackling strongly and his running game was improving

3 weeks ago T Smith was trying hard and setting up tries but lacking some polish in his game and making more errors.

Luke Burt has been our most consistent player and just about our best this season.

Finch has not improved at all in that time and has probably gotten a bit worse each week. And in the meantime someone in his position has played better than him.

So I think you have oversimplified it a bit.

It does appear he will get some more time, and I think we all agree he can play better than he is.

The question is, how much more time can we give him?

And will time alone do the trick?

He really seems not to understand his role in the team - as a lot of people have said, he seems to be playing second halfback rather than a running, occasionally ball playing 5/8.

Maybe some time watching the team perform from the sidelines will help him come to terms with what he has to offer - things like a running option, maintaining team spirit, providing a controlling long kicking game, enthusiasm, competititiveness (most of which have been pretty good the last few weeks)?

out of position or not, he's done absolutely nothing useful this year at all.

Not true. He offloaded the ball to Ian Hindmarsh in space - and iHindy went on to score.

I think it's unfair to question the guy's effort, enthusiasm and competitiveness. He's been trying his balls off every week, and clapping and barking about.

His execution is another matter altogether.

I wasn't questioning those - I acknowledged they had been pretty good in the last few weeks.

But I think to get his execution on track we may be close to the point where he takes a break from the top grade to assess his role in the side.

Ah, my bad. I thought you were bagging out his attutude. My mistake.

I totally agree- if he fails this weekend, send him down to PL where the match is less intense. Just until he findas his feet again.
