Sharks/Newtown Divorce ??

It's about being a CLUB and behaving like it, getting to know people and the characters from flegg up to firsts, creating role models, building loyalty and comittment and a love of the club and a desire for success at that club and for that large squad of blokes you have slogged up the sandhills with all off season.

It's about the 10 foot tall feeling the flegg and PL players get when they get clapped into the sheds by first grade and the big nights after winning all 3 grades. I have forever felt alot better after reserves and flegg have a win, it's infectious and it means the squad has trained well all week and shown up on the day.

I think we can support our own PL team financially Pogo, I just think they tried something different to try and save some dollars and I honestly think they thought the benefit wouuld be there for us as a club. It hasnt turned out that way it seems.

its weird watching cronulla players in newtown jumpers.

i dont understand why we needed to do this, no disrespect to newtown, i think all grades should be playing in a sharks jumper.

well as I say, I think that's going to be the case if the conflict between the two clubs I have heard about this week is true.

Barry Pierce and the board had the Newtown President, Terry R in the President's box last Saturday at Shark Park. Relationships can't be too bad then. I would have thought with both teams near the lead of their respective comps both parties would be happy.

you would think so mate. Happy campers on the crownies Saturday night, pulling the plug tuesday ?

I don't think you can say that cause terry was in the presidents box on saturday they are all good mates, I mean, it was a Newtown Home game too, so I guess Terry is well entitled to sit in the president box at his own home game.

It's a shame about the break up and I for one think there has been a benefit to the sharks, especially the coaching of our PL players, thanks Col Murphy. I will now always be a Newtown supporter and will follow their progress in the NRL. The support us Sharkies got from the Jets supporters was fantastic and when I am next in Sydney for footy I WILL find Henson Park and watch a game and cheer for their team.

If this is true would this be the 3rd or 4th NRL club Newtown has had a falling out with?

Terry R is not our president but he was at Shark Park. Terry R is executive director. Barry V is the president and he was at Shark Park as well.

As for "falling outs" I have to correct the record. Newtown had a deal with Souths in the mid and late 1990s for excess Reserve Graders to go to the Newtown Metro Cup team. Ian Rubin was one of the notable Jets. That ended when Souths were kicked out of the comp. NOT A FALLING OUT.

In 2000, the Jets seized on Souths vacated First Division spot and had a feeder agreement with the NZ Warriors. Mark Tookey, Joe Gulavao and about 5 of the Warriors 2002 Grand Final Squad played for the Jets that year. Newtown missed the top 8 on points difference. The Warriors then changed owners. The new owners were cutting costs (minimise trans-Tasman flights) and wanted to develop the Bartercard Cup. NOT A FALLING OUT.

Newtown's second venture with Souths was the closest to a falling out. Despite big promises about a feeder agreement Newtown never got a player. Then the deal was cancelled by email after pressure from Souths Juniors (who were entering the Jim Beam Cup as a competitor to Newtown). Souths Juniors didn't want Souths to br propping up a competitor. Souths Juniors then raided Newtown's Jim Beam Cup ranks. Newtown then threatened to call in a loan it had made to Souths Leagues Club (which the Leagues Club were behind on). Souths League were so broke that a winding up order was mooted. Souths then came up with a payment plan and gave Newtown ONE PLAYER (Russell Richardson) for that year to see out the agreement.

Basically what has been established on this thread is the mutual benefit to both clubs. In PL, Newtown and Cronulla were mediocre last year (the latter having many fulltime players). The 2005 entity has played very well. Given the success of the top 2 grades I think it is unfair to say it has had a negative effect on overall club culture. That's why I think Cronulla may have another club in the pipeline.

Ok then beside the Cronulla Sutherland Sharks what is the strongest club in the district?

I never quite understood the Newtown thing but tried to see it as a positive.
Both clubs have performed better on the field. Kinga, Stos etc have helped and inturn Aitken Merritt have been great for the Jets.

That said, I understand pogo here, it is a bit strange having another club song played after victory.

So back to the orginal question what is the strongest club in the district?

Such a two minds thing, on one hand I have enjoyed following the Jets, on the other I have always found it to be strange bedfellows thing.

Let the cards fall as they may.

From a pure business point of view I would be looking to build up a second club in the shire to act as the feeder club.
I would also seek to have the Caloundra Sharks as part of the overall club with the hope to get them in the QRL. The Sunshine Coast of Qld is poorly represented and a true growth area.

My 2 cents worth (which of course rounded means zero)

And yes beeks it is all speculation at this stage.

I dont think any clubs who field A grade sides in the district would have enough money or playing ability to be able to help the Sharks field a PL team.

BTW A grade comp as it currently stands:

1. Engadine 22 pts
2. De La 16 pts
3. Gymea 15 pts
4. Como 12 pts
5. Cronulla Cazbah 12 pts
6. Menai 7pts
7. Taren Point 7pts
8. Aquinas 5 pts

But currently we don't one at all. Newtown does.

Cannot be any worse than having to field our own. I would think it was a huge opportunity for them and take some pressure of us, whilst at the same strengthening the district as a whole RL wise.

Yes please and guess who plays for the Caloudra Sharks.........Alfie Langer

Thats right Angry. The Wide Bay division is the strongest outside Brissy.

Guys, I spoke to a Cronulla Director last Sunday. He confirmed that Barry Vining Newtown President and Terry Rowney Senior Newtown Director were with them on Saturday night and boths clubs were extremely happy with the way the Premier League has been performing. Furthermore he advised that they had started talking about the way the relationship will proceed next year. Long live the alliance, I for one would be astounded if it did not continue!
