Should the Warriors play a regular match on Matariki?

This came up in another thread when discussing “event” games, should the Warriors take advantage of our newest public holiday to schedule a regular match on Matariki? With the holiday falling in late June to July and always being observed on a Friday it would seem like an ideal opportunity for the club to get another regular event match happening. What do you guys reckon?

f**k YES!!

As soon as the Matariki dates were locked in I suggested this to both the Warriors and to Gus Gould (while he was involved with the club). Gus said it was above his paygrade but others would be working on it.

It seems like the perfect opportunity for so many reasons. I'd love the club to run with it and I'm sure they'd have plenty of input to keep the celebrations respectful.

The only downside I can see is that Matariki will often clash with State of Origin time, so the draw gets messy with byes and the 8pm Friday game is sometimes skipped. And if we asked the NRL to keep us at 8pm and miss out their later 10pm game they'd laugh us out of the office before getting back on their knees for the TV overlords.

Would have to be [played in NZ I think to have any traction.
Then things get messy with the away team having to agree.

Oh 100%, would have to be a home game to have any real meaning. But that’s hardly an insurmountable obstacle, making sure that a team gets one home game on a particular date isn’t something that the people in charge of scheduling can’t manage, after all they make sure the Storm get one every ANZAC day. Wouldn’t really need any specific agreement from the away team either unless it was going to be the same team every year.

Well, Scurrah's long gone so we wouldn't get fifty different jersey patterns.

Another bonus. I much prefer the respect for the classic jersey that the current administration are showing. When was the lst time we even wore "special"?

I chuckle at the suggestion the NRL would do anything for the Warriors.
I am all for it btw.
It’s actually pretty depressing when you think about it- a holiday that’s not even a holiday for any other club, and has cultural significance in NZ, should be the kind of time when the NRL would immediately acquiesce to locking in a home game for us, but they’d still likely find a bullshit reason not to.
What have we actually been given in return for the sacrifices of the last three years? Exactly nothing so far by my count, despite vague promises.
