The Ranfurly Shield

The Ranfurly Shield, colloquially known as the Log o' Wood, is a trophy in New Zealand's domestic rugby union competition. First played for in 1904, the Ranfurly Shield is based on a challenge system, rather than a league or knockout competition as with most football trophies. The holding union must defend the Shield in challenge matches, and if a challenger defeats them, they become the new holder of the Shield.

The Shield is currently held by Canterbury, who won it from Southland in Round 11 of the Round Robin in the 2010 NPC. Although the professional era of rugby has seen competitions such as the National Provincial Championship and its successor, the ITM Cup, and Super Rugby detracting from the pre-eminence of the Ranfurly Shield, many still regard it as the greatest prize in New Zealand provincial rugby, thanks to its long history, the fact that every challenge is a sudden-death defence of the Shield, and that any team, no matter how lowly, has a chance to win.

That's pretty cool, you don't see that in team sports (not including tag team wrestling matches lol).

yeah its pretty unique to NZ Rugby.

the basic rule is the holder defends it at every pre-season and regular season home game.

so in order to win the Shield you need to go to the holders ground and take it from them.

usually the big unions will hold it for long periods of time... but every so often a smaller union will pinch it off a big side and the whole country becomes captivated by there defense of it... they may only hold for for a month or so... but they usually pack there stadium out for whatever defenses they have... and they have massive parades for the shield etc...

its a wonderful thing to see...

ive got memory's of Auckland holding it for a record 61 defenses between 1985 and 1993... then Waikato came to Auckland for a shield challenge and they brought over 10,000 fans up from the Waikato to cheer hem on... and of course they finally broke Aucklands hold on it.

Ive never seen my province Northland hold it... we havent won it since 78... before i was born.

but every time we challenge for it... its a big occasion.

The release date hasn't been set yet. A lot of resellers are estimating it so people will pre-order, which makes sense. It's amazing how many people tell us that August 26, or July 30, or whathaveyou is the release date though.
