Basing the club on juniors and young guys from elsewhere equals a bunch of promising talent with little experience. Moneywise, they are only cheap or value-for-money until they become stars. Then they are targeted by other clubs and become impossible to hold onto.
The correct way to go is to fill our 17 with the best talent and experience we can afford, I mean the best possible top-line players we can get. And then backfill the other 13 in our top 30 with homegrown promising juniors who have come through our pathways.
Such a strategy must be planned with options for adjustment. Our pathways players must be under contract for a further 3 years prior to being included in the top 30 as one of the 13 mentioned above. For this plan to render success, it must be backed up with good management of the Football Department and be staffed with people with exceptional talent, especially in the following positions:
Head of Football
Pathways Manager
Recruitment and Retention Manager
Head Coach and coaching staff
High Performance and fitness staff
Skills staff and mentors
Our club needs a full rebuild. I have not mentioned the Board of Directors mainly because I cannot see them giving up their cozy position and that at this point in time, they cannot be held accountable. However, the rest can be achieved and if carried out, our club would be in a much better place than what it is now. Just a small percentage of the owners' wealth would be required to fund this exercise but most importantly, it would require the will of the owners to carry out this task.
