Time for a reboot of this thread.

Given our ladder position and various rumours of players departing, these are our off contract players at the end of this season:

Mitchell Allgood - played 1 game in 5 yrs says enough for me.
Jai Field - latest rumour he's off to the Sharks, never reached potential here.
Patrick Kaufusi - plays like a reserve grader but better than Allgood
Josh Kerr - rumour being sort by the Warriors, but can't see where he fits in there.
Jeremy Latimore - already announced his retirement - thank you Lats
Lachlan Maranta - another played 1 game in 5 yrs and again enough for me
Darren Nicholls - he's captain of the CC team and that's about it.
Reece Robson - rumoured to have signed with the Cowboys
Tristan Sailor - developing player, but another small backline option, maybe a keeper.
Lachlan Timm - rumoured to have been told already to look elsewhere.

There's not much $$$ there tbh and it's hard to say who they will re-sign. I think there will be others told to look elsewhere for 2020, some surprises I'm certain.

We would also need to upgrade young Saab's contract to a full NRL contract.

As we can see there's no centre or wing or fullback in our off contract players (Sailor questionable as a fullback option). However, we don't have much $$ to spend either.

I have a feeling our backline will be very similar to this year. I'm hoping that both current centres are dropped and replaced. I'm also convinced Dufty will be fullback next year.
1. Dufty
2. Saab
3. Lomax
4. Ravalawa
5. Periera
6. Norman
7. Hunt

Anyway it's worth keeping an eye on over the next couple of months.
Aiken and Lafai will be regular 1st grade while they are here

The roster is in a mess, especially the backline. Some players have been extended this year who we really should have just let go - Dufty, Pereira - some untried players signed for two years when they should have been signed for one - Ravalawa, Pearson - some signed long term who did not display the form to warrant a long term contract - Aitken, Lafai - and some who should have been extended another year - Timm, Kerr.

We need a major clean out of players because the easy option was taken prior to 2020 and because we are rumoured to be over the cap for 2020.

It is very clear to me that we have a mess.

This club signing Turbo brothers is pie in the sky.
what is disgraceful is even with the knowledge of JDB siuation the only replacement we come up with is a Melbourne reserve grader.
other clubs Souths, Melbourne are swapping 1st graders and we get this.
i am so pissed off with the management of the club, the cronyism, and of course the totally unnecessary re appointment of an imposter of a coach.
I get you Outlaw but the Club has been very restricted with what it can do regarding the JDB situation. Our “compensation “ from the NRL was bugger all leaving us playing with a reduced salary cap.....effectively we have been penalised $500,000 and the potential danger of leaving ourselves open to legal action from Jack has been underestimated. Being told by the NRL that we could only replace JBD by signing a player for ONE year only virtually ended our chances of getting anyone of note, We were between a rock and a hard place, BUT we should have fought harder over this but your frustration, anger etc re our coach, our Board and our situation is well founded.

At the moment we will struggle to attract anyone given our internal situation and our coaching staff. We are in a poor state and player managers know it. Could we get some up and comers who see us as an opportunity, yes, but established high profile stars would see us as a gamble. The reality is that to get a profile player we will have to pay overs. MacGregor and the JDB saga are heavy weights around our neck and it certainly looks like they will remain so in 2020.

Our CEO with the support of the SGI Board should have fought hard for a proper and fair deal immediately after the policy was announced. Jonhston should have asked that, because the policy was introduced retrospectively, a one off deal regarding De Belin should be considered:
  1. De Belin's contract to be transferred to the NRL until legal matters are resolved.
  2. SGI salary cap be credited to the extent of De Belin's contract price.
  3. All financial responsibility towards De Belin to be assumed by the NRL.
Only by adopting these measures would an element of fairness towards SGI - who was not the decision maker of this new policy - would be the right thing to do as far as the treatment of SGI is concerned.

But you like Rav & Pearson over Periera, Lafai & Aitken and had them in your 2020 side...what happened?
Dufty has improved some facets of his game this year...especially in recent weeks..others have not.
And if we bag Dufty's defence..then the whole team except for Cam are to blame.
Attacking options are null and void as they they have to come up with individual brilliance outside the game plan to spark anything.
I would like the team better coached before throwing Dufty out with the rubbish
Aitken was in some sort of good form when re-signed 3 years ago but has not improved and gone backwards...then again so has our playing style
Agree Lafai had a big pre season and first few games in 17 as playing for a contract and has been a passenger ever since even when winning.
Periera deserved a chance but obviously this year has not been able to raise the bar..nor has our game.
I'd keep Periera / Dufty + Rav, Kerr & Timm out of that lot even for depth if someone better came in...and judge them with a better coach.

I agree fully Possm. I think it is a measure of how far we have fallen in the eyes of the NRL that our requests could be virtually ignored. It shows how poorly we court and work with the media, and how, unfortunately, poor our leadership is. The quicker this Club realises that it no longer has the status it once did, the better. We are no longer the force we were off the field and are failing on it. We need to be very careful. Ironically Hunt, the million dollar man who many of us complain about, needs to succeed. If he continues to struggle and if we are seen to criticise and abandon him, when will the next ‘star’ sign for the RedV if another club offer nearly the same money? No Hunt needs to succeed because if he doesn’t, getting any of the players mentioned in this thread, becomes so much harder.

Hopefully JDB wins his appeal to be reinstated, even if he doesn’t play it opens up the door for the Dragons to sue the NRL, they really left us high and dry this season. If this is an extreme circumstance and need extreme measures then fine but they need to put in place some measures to ensure it doesn’t affect the entire season first before making hasty decisions.

I think, this is a golden opportunity to actually
Take the nrl to court..
The way we've been treaded, is nothing short of unjust behavior.
The NRL, have shown
miss management throughout this year.

Dufty is not even ripping canterbury cup apart. We need a top flight fullback with a complete skill set, size and speed.

Like who?

Who would want to come to us to play under our current structure, play under McGregor and play for a team battling in 14th spot on the ladder. Add in our well advertised internal strife and reported salary cap stretched already to its limit.
We still have to fill a roster of 30 players, so unloading 5, 6 or 7 players still means we have to replace them. Add in the DeBelin debarkle and yes its a complete mess.
Dufty would be on what 250k maybe 300k, which top flight, with all the requirements, fullback will come here for that?

Carlton. He has hardly played CC to judge that this year.
He was thrown at centre last weekend.

100% this. We want this and that but you can only get what is truly available and the shelves are emptying out fast to fill 16 teams. That even goes for decent wingers, props and centres available for 2020..and coaches

I said Bevan French or Manu Mau as value for money...no they go to England!...money..money..money

And before you talk about other teams discards like RCG..there is a reason they get let go by the clubs...and it isnt because they are that good.
Penrith have realised RCG is not the player he was and probably will ever be after 2 broken jaws in quick succession. Happens to plenty of players. Look at Napa, Klemmer, Dugan, Moylan, Bird and prob Shaun Johnson, Josh Reynolds, Packer...look at every team from 6th place to 16th..all have over rated and over paid players in their squads
We are not alone for possibly paying overs for players..it is getting the balance right of getting rid of the deadwood and having a mix of average and some good players is the hardest.

I don’t think Dufty is going as bad as people think, he is just being used poorly for mine. He is the same size as Billy Slater, and other small fullbacks like Barba and Bowen have been great. I’d love to see him sniff around the middle a bit more, I used to watch him in 20s and he and Leilua had an awesome combo. Also would like to say f$$$ the Roosters.
