John Skandalis re-signs
Written by: Wests Tigers media release

Wests Tigers are pleased to announce that John Skandalis has resigned with the club for a further 2 years.

Skandalis’ first grade football career began with Western Suburbs Magpies in 1996. One of the few original players that joined Wests Tigers in 2000, and is still with the club, Skandalis is best known for his dedication and consistent effort on the field each week. As well as his loyalty he is a local junior who has only played with one Junior League Team, Minto Cobras, and one NRL Club, Wests Magpies/ Wests Tigers.

“I really enjoy playing for Wests Tigers, and being part of a club that is working hard to be successful in the future”.

“The next two years will be a great time to be involved with Wests Tigers, the strong youth coming up through the ranks and talented players secured by management will make the side a competitive force”, said Skandalis.

A regular in the team line up each week Skandalis played his 100th game for Wests Tigers in Rd 8 against the Panthers.

“John’s strong on field performance and devotion to the club, make him a valuable commodity to Wests Tigers”.

“While we are focussed on nurturing our youth, and securing new talent, being able to retain players like Skandalis is vital to the clubs success in the future”, said CEO Steve Noyce.

This is the match report from Skandalis' first game.

War At Campbelltown by David Middleton
Cambelltown Sports Ground resembled a scene from the Wild West when Penrith and Western Suburbs staged a spiteful, brawling showdown in front of a huge Friday night television audience. League officials ordered an immediate inquiry into the match, which saw four players sin-binned, one sent off and two players placed on report. Four players were subsequently suspended by the ARL's judiciary.

Western Suburbs fielded an inexperienced front row pairing in Darren Capovilla (six first grade games) and John Skandalis (top grade debut), and Penrith clearly went into the match intent on unsettling the youngsters.

The Panthers' aggression got way out of control, however, and referee Mark Oaten battled to retain his authority throughout the match.

From the time Penrith captain Steve Carter was placed on report for a high tackle in the opening minutes of the game, tempers simmered. An ugly all-in brawl erupted from a scrum in the 12th minute and Oaten sent two Panthers (Darren Brown and Scott Pethybridge) and one Magpie (Damian Kennedy) to the sin bin.

Questionable tackles and niggling antics proliferated as football took a back seat. Penrith hooker Danny Farrar was binned for sparking another brawl in the 57th minute, and Panthers' replacement forward Fa'ausu Afoa was sent off for a high tackle on Wests' skipper Paul Langmack nine minutes from fulltime.

After trailing 6-4 at the break, the Magpies soon took the lead, through a dubious try to Langmack, and then secured the result with a runaway try to fullback Ken McGuinness close to fulltime.

In the aftermath, Carter and Wests' Darren Willis were reported, while Brown, Farrar and Wests' Kennedy were cited. Brown (six weeks), Afoa (five), Farrar (one) and Kennedy (one) were all suspended.

Its weird...I look at that team and think about that game, where I was woorking etc at the time and it seems so very long ago. But it was 4 months before my son was born and hes still only in infants school.
Whatever happened to brandon pearson....cant remember,...but he was gunna be a superstar.

He moved to Canberra, changed his name to Brandon Costin, went over to England where his career will die a natural death like they all do.

I don't know how many FG games Langers played for us exactly but I think it was around the 160 mark. So with his games this year John has moved into rare territory for Wests players. Holman and Tommy at 203 and 201 games are a long way out front in terms of First Grade games for Wests. Next are Langers (on what ever he got to) TC on 162 and Wayne Smith on 160 so if he hasn't already this season he will move into third spot all time (although Georgie and Cherry miht be in the mix there somewhere as well). Come the end of his contract so long as form and fitness holds he'll overtake Yappy as our longest serving (in terms of games) player.

I've criticised his play plenty in the past, but never his committment to his club. Well done Big Johnny.
