Simple question

I'm a NSW'er, but i'm going to lead away and say Slater. He has done it for longer....I think that in attack they are about equal, but in defense/positionally (which is a key skill for fullbacks), Slater has it over him

Over to you

Cheers,
Moffo

I think it's unfair to Hayne to suggest they are equal in attack.

Hayne is streets ahead of Slater in that regard.

Billy is better at chasing the 'set play grubber' - and is very good when presented with a gap.

Hayne can run an offense himself, can put in the kick for others, can set up linebreaks or tries with the pass and can present himself with a gap - whether through footwork or plain brute strength.

Slater is more of an 'opportunist' - who does it very well. But this year has been sketchy for him and he's not in the top 3 fullbacks on form over the course of this year. He's played a couple of good games this year - where Hayne has been strong all year long - and has laced that with a selection of 'elite level' games.

Defensively and positionally Hayne is huuuugely underrated thanks to a perceived notion that he must be bad in that area because he's so good in attack.

[watch the Hayne bashers come along and present the flawed and incorrect subjective opinions that Hayne hasn't done anything up until round 18....]

Did the NRL season only kick off in July?.
M.I.A most of the yr ,has some good games against the cellar dwellars & suddenly the bandwagon starts rolling.

I think thats being a bit dismissive of Slater. Sure he takes advantage of opportunities but that aside, he has created loads himself through being a great support runner. Lets not forget that he has played in a team that has been playing for nothing this year...so a bit hard to hang him for that

Hayne is not great defensively, the commentators just choose not to talk about it. I actually think he is getting better, but still has ground to make up before I would even contemplate putting him in the same ballpark as slater

One of these threads pop up every week. Whenever they go head to head Slater seems to always run past Hayne to score at least a try a game

Slater plays in a team worth twice as much. Hayne still won last years Dally M medal despite that.

Hayne is only 22 as well. Slater, at, what, 28 - has peaked.

I have loved watching Slater's career - despite playing for complete and utter scum except for his Kangaroos jumper. Slater is the best player to come out of QLD since Langer - yes - he's a better fullback than Heather was.

And barring the injury runs that hobbled Snake and Mini - by 2020 Hayne will be spoken of as the best player of all time. Yes, even better than Mick Liubinskas!!!!

Slater only just turned 27. It's hardly over the hill for a quality fullback.

Hayne is an immensely gifted attacking player, positionally he is a flake in defense though, sometimes he gets right then other times he has monumental screw up's due to his laziness.

I'd prefer Slater in my team, he's a natural competitor (even if he is a grub and a wanker), and he'll give you good performances from round 1 through to the GF. Something Hayne doesn't.

OK - so we will all discount the fact that Slater has the luxury of playing behind the 12 most expensive players assembled in the NRL?

And we will discount the fact that Hayne has never thrown away the world cup.

Will Slater get better? As good as he is - no. with 5 years up on Hayne, Slater has only played 4 more origins and 4 more tests.

huge age difference,

we need to look at this again in another 5 years, Harne is young and inconsistent, but maturity will come with age

That would be a valid comparison if Slater and Hayne both played for the same state. Slater may have "lost" the world cup, but Hayne has lost an origin match with a nice little pass from the sideline along the ground to an incoming QLD player.

No doubt Slater has played in a great side. In attack Hayne has Slater beat, without question. Slater is much better defensively though, he is a more "complete" footballer at the moment. Whether that changes in the future, no one knows.

Am obviously biased, would pick Billy if it were only about line breaks, support play, tries scored and overall consistency - however, what Hayne has as a playmaker makes him the complete package

Of course a bloke who plays in a team with more good and consistent players is going to get less Dally M points week to week.

Hayne hasn't got a heap of competition with anyone for them at Parramatta.

All that shows is that Parramatta were a one man band last year, and we all knew that anyway.

Hayne is a playmaker, Slater is a oppotunist in attack.
Slater is more consistant in defence and postional play.
Hayne is a 5/8 playing fullback really.
Hard to compare the 2 but I'm glad Hayne for my team and not against them.

Slater plays in a team full of stars. How would he go being the main architect of attack and go to man all the time like Hayne is? How would he go surrounded by an average hooker and half like Hayne has to? We really don't know... perhaps we will next year.
