Hayne has been great all year - just been AWESOME in the last 3 games.

The previous 17 there was an argument about who was having the best season as a fullback: Hayne led all fullbacks in meterage, meters per kick return - and was second in try assists and line break assists.

He played the deciding role in 4-5 games this year BEFORE round 17 (Manly x2, NQ, Bulldogs, Storm)

Then BOOM - he has 3 games which nobody else in the comp could produce (NQ, Penrith, Bulldogs) and shows that there is no debate.

Oh - no debate except on the LU forums where people admit they haven't been watching Parra all year but can somehow authoritatively state that (1) Hayne only turns up in July and (2) Hayne has poor positional play

While you maniacs go on with your ridiculous 'theories' I'm sitting back enjoying watching the best player in the world (by quite a distance) and laughing at the suggestion that he's poorly placed defensively. Yeah - keep on dreaming bozos...

I think Slater right now, he is the main man at the Storm you always see him calling the plays behind the ruck, he has improved a hell of a lot in the last 2-3 years, prior to this QLD didn't even like Slater, they preferred Hunt as the fullback because he returned the ball back stronger. Slater only 2 years back was a rocks or diamonds style player who could lose you a big game through stupidity as much as win you one with ability. (Example he scored the winning try in origin in 08 but cost us the World Cup in the same year)

Hayne at 22 is so far in front of Slater at 22 there is no point comparing and Hayne isn't near his peak IMO.

If Hayne does what he did last year again I might change my mind but Slater just.

Look, I'd probably choose Slater at this stage - by a tiny margin.

But let's stop all this talk about Slater's defence and how great he is - he has to be the most inconsistent fullback under the high ball in the game.

Cast your mind back to last year's Grand Final - we hoist up a bomb and he leaps up like an AFL forward...Only to spill it with minimal pressure. It was only the fact we got nervous and gave the ball to Lowrie on the last, who put in a bad kick straight to Hoffman, that prevented us from potentially scoring a try that would have made things very, very interesting.

Sure, Slater's positional play is unmatched. But he is just as likely to spill a bomb as he is to make a spectacular catch.

Then again, Hayne doesn't jump to contest them, so in the regard of defusing bombs, they're both as bad as each other.

Umm in that year Slater dominated the comp from round 1, won man of the tournament in the world cup, the golden boot and only missed out on the Dally M because he lost points for Jason Nightingale headbutting his fists. And he didn't lose Australia the world cup, he set up 2 trys for Australia and creates 1 for the kiwis, his contribution in that game was far more positive than negative.

He was pretty consistent that year...

Jarryd Hayne at his best is better than Slater but at his worst is much worse than Slater.

Slater is just brilliantly consistent all the time.

Jarryd Hayne just. But only because his best is better and he does it all himself unlike Slater who is surrounded by superstars.

Slater for me. But I would have both of them in my team.

I think there is a few people here who have shown their hatred of the Storm and therefore Billy Slater.

It shows ;-)

Just a side note Slater Post Origin has been Terrible...

Perhaps the biggest fail ever.

Did you watch the Storm against the Warriors? Slater was the only one trying and was probably MoM in a losing side

And a sh*tload going the other way too.

Slater has peaked at 28...yep. Good one...
Have you ever known a back to be at their best after that? Forwards - especially front rowers - yes. Backs? Once knee and ankle injuries get them, speed and elusiveness declines. The good ones who continually develop and evolve - eg Lockyer, Fittler and arguably Tahu - prolong their careers. But the mid to late 20's is when these players are at their most dangerous.

Slater may still gain more footy knowledge, but he won't get faster nor will his step increase.

If he does, that would be fantastic - he is awesome to watch.

Slater blew Hayne away this Origin. But hey, all QLDers did...

Hayne is great, but only in patches when he wants...and when his team is going well. No heart.

Slater has been just fantastic for the last 5 years. I mean he is a prime specimen of a fullback everyone would love to have their team.

Raw pace, great backup play, defence is amazing.

However I went Hayne. This guy is almost Andrew Johns like. Everytime he gets the ball something is gonna happen. I must say never had this feeling with anyone after Joey retired but Hayne definately has it. I am not saying Hayne is in the same league as Joey (don't know if anyone will be) but that feeling of excitment and anticipation each and everytime Hayne touches the ball its amazing. AMAZING!

you've got a choice of

- a merkin who puts in all year and has an unbelievable will to win
- an amazing player who is close to the best in the world for two months a year

it's a tough one.
