Sloan

Geez there‘s a fair bit of criticism for a kid being coached by a peanut with no idea in a team that is going backwards. He had two bad games last year albeit in horrendous conditions and was subsequently dropped putting a massive dent in his confidence. This year he’s having a massive go and may have made mistakes but that’s all part of the learning curve. Trying to diffuse a Burton bomb is any fullbacks worst nightmare. This kid and he is still a kid is going to be a tremendous talent (as he has shown already) and I for one hope we keep him for many, many more years.

Sloan, along with 90% of backline players are a victim of todays "oz tag" competitions. They do not know how to time their approach, when committing to make a side on tackle.
Sloan completely over- ran his approach against the Bulldogs winger, purely because he has not been shown or practiced for hrs on hrs tackling down the beach how to tackle with their left & right shoulder, this includes Ben Hunt & Lomax who can only tackle with their right shoulder
If they want to contact me I will offer my services for Free, just like a current Storm Player.
I pull my hair out every time a see a so called 1st grader f##k it up..

Sloan can't tackle, take the high ball under pressure, or bring the ball back strongly after fielding a kick. At this time in his career, he is not an NRL fullback.
Happy to persist with him at 1 or on the wing for now while we won't be winning many games anyway. What coaching is he receiving? That's another question.

I think we are burnt by the 5 year long Dufty experiment which never quite materialised. Some good coaches could make Sloan into a weapon.

Sully to 7 , Hunt to 6 , reason being Sully wont touch the ball if Hunts at 7 .......
Better reason(s) - they are the natural, best positions for both of them + Amone is just dreadful at 5/8 and probably not a long-term option anyway + Liddle is a very good 9. To be fair, I wanted to see the Sullivan / Amone combo and Amone was just as bad as usual. IMO Sullivan is clearly our best attacking player. It's been idiotic in the extreme to leave him out of the side.

IMO - Lomax is a (potentially good) FB. Sloan is a winger (with possible transition to FB with more 1st grade experience). Sloan certainly has a big heart, which I admire and appreciate but FB is a hell of a difficult position to start your 1st grade career. It's been character building for him, that's for sure.

Might as well play Lomax
at fullback. He's already getting paid fullback money.

Lomax needs a stint in reserves. Ego out of control, currently not good enough. I know you're suggesting fullback, but some are suggesting slot him straight back into centre. What did Max Feagai do to get dropped? Make one error trying to get the ball away to make something of a play where he was run out of room? Let's not forget how many errors Lomax makes every game. Feagai's defence was also far superior to that of Lomax, got caught in field once and was able to cover for it. Lomax under the high ball at fullback would be an absolute disaster, dropping Sloan again is not the answer either.

I agree Lomax needs a stint in reserve grade - although I strongly suspect it's a personal rather than professional decision from Hook. I also think both Feagais have some talent. I wouldn't drop Sloan but I think some time on the wing would be a steadier introduction for him (look at Ramsey for example). Lomax played FB under McGregor if I recall correctly. I don't think he's poor under the high ball. What he can do is catch, run and be a bit of a mongrel as a defender. He needs space to be able to use his skills. He'd be much more effective coming from the back of the field or running into gaps rather than trying to break the defensive line from a standing start.

Agree with you 100%
Had his chance/s and it must be over now.

He should have been dropped for ego issues last year when they first cropped up. That's on Hook. He could have got that out of Lomax's system then and there. But I'm not sure if it's still an issue. In the games I've watched he's been having a crack. Yes he doesn't have enough impact but he looks like he's trying. Should point out I've only been watching on TV - he could be doing stupid things off camera and I wouldn't see it.

Just out of interest, I checked the stats for all Dragons games so far this year. Lomax averages 1.62 errors per game. That's the same as our other centre Suli. He handles the ball more than Suli so while he definitely has an error or two in him, he's not that bad. Whether he would make more or less errors at fullback, that's anyone's guess. As for high balls, I'm confident Lomax would go for them. I have much less confidence in Sloane. Running the ball back? Both of them would probably throw the ball to Rava in preference to bringing it back themselves.

In any case, I don't think much of either of them at fullback. They both have deficiencies. The rookie fullback for Wests makes them both look bog average.

Max Feagai has shown in 2 games he more natural ability to play FB than Sloan will ever have.

Yet again people getting carried away with an attacking player lighting it up here and there rather than looking objectively at the situation.

All the excuses that Sloan is young, Sloan has been mismanaged, Sloan has been treated poorly bla bla bla.

Slater, Lockyer, Tedesco and many others have made multiple errors in the early part of their careers but all showed quick improvement in the most basic fundamentals and that is because they knew they had to put their bodies on the line in the most challenging of situations.

Sloan knows it but refuses to do it plain and simple.

Even today there are very young fullback just starting out that are light years in front of Sloan.

Blame the coach all you like but Hook can't push him under the ball or push him in front of the attacking player to make him take the bloke head on.

Sorry OT this time, you cannot be serious. He has not even shown me yet he is even first grade worthy let alone speed and agility for fullback.

Some very harsh criticism of Sloan. He had an absolutely terrible game on the weekend, it was diabolical. But to say that Fegai has shown more ability than Sloan ever will have?
Yeah nah, I’ve seen a hell of a lot more ability in Sloan than Fegai.
Sloan may not make it, time will tell, but he has potential.
Bird is the one we should be hammering after the weekend.
